1. I've long suspected that if there were a hell . . .
it would involve line dancing.

3. Line dancing is an abomination
upon the earth.
One of the early signs of the antichrist.

4. Heh?
Y'all got it ALL WRONG!!! Line dancing is the most fun you can have with a bunch of folks where EVERYONE puts their petty differences aside!!! It's the essence of DEMOCRACY!!! The Madison! The Stroll! The Wanderer!!! The ELECTRIC SLIDE!!! NO ONE physically able to participate is excluded!

(Now them hieroglyphics you linked to are another issue entirely...)

7. Really!!!
EVERBODY of a mind to can participate without fear of looking silly. It's like traditional Irish music, everyone plays till everyone gets it and then some more.

LINE DANCING IS A DEMOCRATIC, HUMANISTIC INSTITUTION!!!

8. line dancing is a sheep like institution
everyone does the same thing, so there is no need to be creative.
Also it kinda spoils the whole idea of having or finding a dance partner, doesn't it.
Plus, "The Electric Slide" is not a song, just a bunch of talky dance instructions. I am waiting for the "Simon says" version.
Simon says slide to the left. Simon says slide to the right. Everybody clap your hands.
Aha. I didn't say Simon says.

10. No No NO!!!!
It's All a matter of perspective. Line dancing is like singing "Happy Birthday to You." Everybody KNOWS the drill! The purpose is celebratory!

OBVIOUSLY, you have no point of reference for "The Stroll." IT had a solo section and your partner was whoever appeared at the front of the opposite line. All I know of "The Electric Slide" is the LINE DANCE. If there's an accompanying song, I missed that bit of media madness. (It's NOT my favorite as I prefer the 8-bar meme).

I had a EUREKA flash reading your post. What's DYING in America is that sense of COMMUNITY!

12. doesn't everybody know the drill to "baby got back"?
You get out on the dance floor and shake your booty.
But that's why I detest the electric slide. At a dance, you are supposed to hear songs, you get up and dance to the songs, or just sit and enjoy the songs if you prefer. The electric slide is a travesty and a mockery and a sham of that - it has no beat and you cannot dance to it. I give it a 7 on a scale of 1 to 100.
Sorry, but if I am at a dance I would much rather hear a song I like than participate in someone else's idea of fun.
In the old days, the community had a place for their friendly neighborhood curmudgeon.

13. Ooooh Deeeeaaar...
OK FORGET the Electric Slide. I have NO reference to the earworm that pushes your buttons. Lucky me, I'd prolly agree with you.

Let's talk, rather, about the COMMUNITY aspect of line dancing. It REALLY is SUCH FUN!!! Two recent cases in point (both weddings):

The 2 older sisters of the groom, in their late 60's are emboldened by me doing a line dance alone on the floor. They picked up the steps, much to my amazement, immediately Turns out these two shake a tailfeather WEEKLY in their little British village. Taught me 3 MORE. Some of that shit THEY had down took me awhile!!! Danced all damn night!

Turkish folk songs, Aslans voice giving me gooseflesh and EVERYBODY has the next person's pinkie and the whole room is in motion. The women's line was a basic step, the arm and hand changes were the challenge. The men did this one dance that I ALMOST got before the next tune... I saw the old women pointing, smiling and laughing at me and felt TOTALLY supported in my efforts! VERY. HIP. FOOTWORK. Danced all damn night.

Which brings us to the link MrS posted and the challenge of Dance Notation. It is only useful as an adjunct. First and foremost, one has to be TAUGHT to dance by a LIVE HUMAN BEING. The notation cannot describe center of gravity/weight shift stuff which is crucial in getting from here to there.

How many times did my coach tell me "Get down into the ice?" I had no idea as I struggled and strained UNTIL I danced with this 14 year old who grabbed my hand and took me on this fast-paced adventure... "Don't worry Karenina, I won't let you fall. Just get down into the ice..." I grokked in 5 seconds what I had not in the previous 5 MONTHS! I was SUDDENLY on a serious edge, moving swiftly, noiselessly and COMPLETELY UNAFRAID.

Tanzen ist Leben und Leben ist tanzen.

And this piece of horror! Ever see a group dance the achy breaky?

Achy Breaky Heart

Sung by: Billy Ray Cyrus
Written by: Don Von Tress

You can tell the world you never was my girl
You can burn my clothes when I'm gone
Or you can tell your friends just what a fool I've been
And laugh and joke about me on the phone

You can tell my arms to go back onto the phone
You can tell my feet to hit the floor
Or you can tell my lilps to tell my fingertips
They won't be reaching out for you no more

But don't tell my heart, my achy breaky heart
I just don't think it'd understand
And if you tell my heart, my achy breaky heart
He might blow up and kill this man
Ooo

You can tell your ma I moved to Arkansas
Or you can tell your dog to bite my leg
Or tell your brother Cliff who's fist can tell my lips
He never really liked me anyway

Oh tell your Aunt Louise, tell anything you please
Myself already knows that I'm okay
Oh you can tell my eyes to watch out for my mind
It might be walking out on me today

But don't tell my heart, my achy breaky heart
I just don't think it'd understand
And if you tell my heart, my achy breaky heart
He might blow up and kill this man
Ooo

But don't tell my heart, my achy breaky heart
I just don't think it'd understand
And if you tell my heart, my achy breaky heart
He might blow up and kill this man
Ooo

Don't tell my heart, my achy breaky heart
He might blow up and kill this man
Ooo

Don't tell my heart, my achy breaky heart
He might blow up and kill this man
Ooo

16. Sorry but if I'm going to dance with someone
I'm going to dance with THEM, not everyone in the damn joint. I don't want to be doing the exact same thing as everyone else and I sure don't want to do it to the painfully bad noise that passes for music at a line dancing shindig.

You call it democratic - I call it the ultimate in sheeplike group behavior - no originality, no spontaneity. It's like a nightmare, long version of the Hokey Pokey.

19. Ah, the exclusivity of it all...
:SIGH: Such a limited view of the joys of dancing and the subtleties of body movement. Is it fear of contact? Poor thing. Noise that passes for music? Are you land-locked? Get outta there much?

(may God have mercy as well), can I still come to the bar occasionally? I promise I won't do it--I doubt you have the music anyway!
