I have a computer shop. Got all the repair work for now done so working on some government surplus computers I got putting hard drives in them, cleaning them up and so forth.

I work 55 hours a week, don't make near enough money but I am my own boss and business is getting better.

14. I used to have a radio show six days a week, for four hours a day.
That was really tough! When I married, with two kids of my own and three stepkids, I begged management to cut my hours from 24 to 20. That helped a little --

27. One night, a long time ago, we were invited to a posh dinner party...
I got dressed up, got a sitter for my two babies, and headed to the condominium where the party was to take place.

It belonged to some rich couple and it was about the most beautiful place I had ever seen, along the beachfront, in Hollywood or Fort Lauderdale.

The place was full of people dressed in finery. (I wore a dress from Lerner's that probably cost $19.95.) I didn't know anyone there, but introduced myself and told them that Larry would be there soon.

To make a long story short, he never showed up....

Probably at the dog races !?
I met him in the stables at Goucher College... his daughter (Chaia?) had her OWN horse!:spray:

Larry was pretty rude until he found out I was the Director of Student Activities at Goucher.:pals:

38. I took care of Chaia when she was about three years old!
Edited on Sat May-07-05 10:07 AM by Radio_Lady
She was a cute kid! My daughter, Linda, is probably a year younger than Chaia. Larry used to talk about Andy, his adopted son, but I never saw him. Then there is Larry King, Jr., whom I just learned about last year, and a daughter, Kelly, who never recognized him as her father. She uses her mother's name.

Yeah, Larry had a lot of problems in those days. But he inadvertently helped me get a radio job when I was pretty desperate. When I got on WEEI in Boston, and he was doing his midnight to dawn show from the Washington area. I called him on his birthday in November, and he didn't even remember me.

Yeah, that was all back at WIOD-AM "Wonderful Isle of Dreams" (which used to be WCKT and may still be) -- the radio station is located on an island in the middle of Biscayne Bay, between Miami and Miami Beach, and connected to the land masses by causeways.

Where is Goucher College? I've never heard of it.

40. Goucher ? It's outside Baltimore Maryland.
In the ,now, mega suburb of Towson, Maryland.

Until 1987 it was all girls enrollment. The school was socially intertwined with the U.S. Naval Academy for years! If fact, H. Ross Perot met Mrs. Perot at the "Blind Date Ball"...he was a Middie and she was a Goucher freshman.

As for LARRY...I thought his Midnight to Dawn radio show, when he did all 5 hours...was some of the best in radio history.

FWIW:shrug:

45. You should have heard him in the 1950s when he was a DJ --
He did some of the most inventive stuff when he was in his 20s. I didn't listen every day, but I knew about him.

Here's me in my late teens on local TV in Miami.

http://moneycentral.groups.msn.com/millenniummadness/ftlpeoplepastamppresent.msnw?action=ShowPhoto&PhotoID=1905

I was born in May 1939, Larry in November 1934. I don't recall how we met, but I had one date with him -- he took me to a "Lover's Lane" on that same causeway with WIOD and tried to "make time" with me. I told him to forget it and that was that, at least until the 1970s when we met up again.

His younger brother, Marty, was a doll, and so was his mother Jennie, whom I recall vividly. Her little apartment was covered with pictures of Larry. An older brother died when he was just a young boy.

For all his foibles, I don't wish him any ill. He seems to be involved with a stable Mormon family through his young wife, Shawn Southwick King. His mother-in-law is just a few years older than Larry himself! His two kids, Chance and Cannon, are pretty cute. They're about as old as my two grandchildren -- I can't imagine raising such little kids, but then, I'm sure they have help.

47. So you saw and walked The Grove in the 60's !?
When I lived in The Grove ('88-'90) I just loved the hell out of it...but all the Old Time Grovers used pooh-poo, it by saying:

 "Ah! You MISSED ,it! Shoulda' seen The Grove in the 60's, Kid!":smoke: :smoke:

When I took my wife back there in '03, I told somebody,

"You shoulda seen it in the Late 80's ! The Glory Days"

83. Coconut Grove was a sleepy and quiet place in the 1950s --
Edited on Sun May-08-05 01:16 PM by Radio_Lady
Mostly I recall an artists' colony and some gorgeous older homes. I lived in Miami from 1940s through 1962, when I graduated from college and moved to New York City. After that, my former husband and I came back briefly in 1970-71, and my son was born in South Miami at Mercy Hospital (my room looked out on Biscayne Bay). But it was an unhappy time while my nine year marriage broke up shortly after the birth.

My current husband took me on a Gray Line tour of MY OWN CITY in the 1980s, including to the University of Miami -- where I went to school between 1956 and 1962, interrupted by a year-long first marriage to a doctor and the birth of a stillborn child in 1960. The whole area had grown so much that I didn't recognize it.

We stopped briefly in Coconut Grove and it was a "happening place" that day -- with street performers, dancers, etc. It must have been on some holiday.

Going back in 2006 for my 50th high school reunion should be interesting! I've never done any of the reunions, but I don't want to miss this one.

In peace and Happy Mother's Day to you.

Warm regards,

Radio Lady

3. Sorry you have to work --
Edited on Sat May-07-05 09:15 AM by Radio_Lady
What kind of work do you do?

I'm checking out new books for my audio program next Friday.
I'll probably do a little cooking (very little). The kids and grandkids are taking us out to dinner tomorrow at a local Chinese restaurant.

My husband is the volunteer president of our homeowner's association. He is meeting with another board member at a local Starbucks this morning. It's a lot of work for NO pay. We have 262 families and they have to pay $100 a year to help keep up the common areas of this development. The people who aren't satisfied with the work that the board and the president are doing -- trash them regularly in email and at the private web site.

The president's two-year term is over in January. I don't think he wants to continue with the responsibility. He originally took the position because we're retired and he had the time to do it (plus immeasurable brainpower, math and English ability, plus patience). However, after two years, he tells me he's burned out of it.

Edited on Sat May-07-05 09:22 AM by Radio_Lady
It seems like yesterday that I watched the 2004 race. I've always wanted to go to that event, ever since I was a little girl.

Mommy bought me a cowgirl hat and Roy Rogers cap guns -- not dolls. I was a tomboy! (But now, I have a little doll collection and my seven year old granddaughter and I have "pretend" tea parties.)

I finally have enough seniority at the bank that I haven't worked a Saturday in a year...do not miss it. Mr B is playing video games and I going to garden and then later we are going shopping at Costco for stuff for our Mother's day Picnic that our families are coming to tomorrow. I have promised Mr B I would not talk politics this weekend, but with his mom, my mom and my grandma...we are bound to get on the subject of the stupidest spineless man in history. It's nice to see that much hatred for one person in three generations of family members!

He took over the food shopping without my asking him -- it's a great relief for me, after doing it for about 40 years.

Oh, we have a farmer's market opening today. That's really a lot of fun and good fresh food from the Willamette Valley (Oregon) -- runs May 7 through October 29.

I go there to buy my lunch for the week and usually can't resist buying something else on the spur of the moment. Last week it was two really gorgeous BIG Hybiscuses. One is a deep red-orange, the other a lovely orange sherbet. They now grace my otherwise lackluster patio.

78. I'm a receptionist
so, really I don't do a whole lot. I answer the phone, and some light (really light) data processing, and I'll address a hundred or so letters and get them stamped. Oh, and if someone walks in I do the usual hello, blah blah blah.

But I have already gotten yelled at on the phone by some customer. Never yell at the person that answers the phone, I can't fix your situtation.

Right now, I'm just lurking around DU.

74. I did the Race For The Cure this morning.
My husband has some big mysterious thing planned for this afternoon. We are "going out" (all of us, kids too), but he won't tell me where.

77. Going to see...
Jon Stewart tonight in Indy. The town will be hopping tonight with the post-Mini Marathon festivities, pre-500 Race Opening Day festivities, and the Pacers playing in Boston. I'm soooo pumped!
Life Is Good! :)

81. I worked today and made over time pay
Edited on Sat May-07-05 03:33 PM by Nikia
If I could work every Saturday, we'd be a lot better off financially. It's been a long work week though. I'm rather tired.
