My tree is no more..
Our poor tree in our front yard met its maker today.. For about 10 years now, it;s been slowly dying, as have ALL the trees like it that were planted 26 years ago when this development was built..

Something called ash white fly came through here, and decimated them..

As much as I was ready to see it GONE (made a mess of the cars)..it still was sad to see it gone in less than 2 hours..

It brought back memories of when dutch elm disease killed so many stately elms in my hometown..

I am not so sure I even want another tree in the front yard.. Our landscape guy is going to concrete the side yard, and trim the trees in the back, and trim all the VERY LARGE yuccas (some are two stories high)...

At first my husband said he would do it, but the realization has sunk in.. We are just getting too old and creaky to be doinjg all this heavy stuff, so we are happy to pay the young folks..

and in case anyone's interested.. they are LICENSED real landscapers..not a crew rounded up at Home Depot :P..

1. Hi, SoCalDem,
It is always sad to see a tree come down. Even one that needs to...We recently took down a cypress that was dying. I was sad before it went, but after, I felt much better. Not to mention that there is now a LOT more sun and light in our dining room! Hopefully you will soon be feeling better and able to think of the good that results from this tree being gone.

My sympathies, nonetheless!

:hi:

2. So sorry to hear about your tree, it is hard to see them go.
I am sending you a poem about trees, I really like.

In towering splendor once I stood
A regal monarch of the wood,
My branches once reached to the sky
See me now but do not cry.
The Creator's work has yet to cease
I've become a shelter for bird and beast,
And when at last I fall to the Earth
The life I leave will inspire new birth;
A seedling springs forth from the ground
Nature's cycle goes round and round.
- S. Edward Palmer, Spirit Tree

I am a real treehugger, so I can understand how you feel.

3. I'm sorry to hear that......
...and I know how you feel. I've had diseased trees in the past, and take it personal, if I can't save them. We just lost a cherry tree that died very quickly. It was large and pretty. I tried everything I could, but it died. We haven't had it taken down yet - due to lack of funds - and everytime I look at it, I still can't figure out how it died so quick!

4. Very sorry. We lost so many trees in my area during the hurricanes last
year. Many of the grand archway oaks that lined our streets forever, just gone -- like that. Glorious live oaks with huge canopies -- gone. It was heartbreaking.

I know what it's like to miss a tree(s).

6. It's such a change, isn't it?
Sorry to hear that you've lost a tree. We had quite a lot of hurricane damage and had to take out a huge maple tree only a few months ago. It just became apparent to us that the tree was too old to withstand another storm. After going through three, it was quite battered. Anyway, to protect our home, we had to have it taken out. It's changed our landscape significantly and I miss it.
