because I don't do any of the things listed. Could someone list some other rightwing vices, please? I'm starting to feel a little self-righteous here; I can't think of anything, but there's got to be something...

8. Does secretly engaging in right-wing virtues count?
I value the past.

I respect the wisdom of my elders. They paid their dues and deserve to be listened to.

I believe that social reforms should be governed by the rule of "Measure twice, cut once."

I believe that material goods are no substitute for spiritual values.

I mean, it's not like the right is practicing any of these itself any more. So can I have them, can I have them, huh?

9. I don't really do any of the above
but I like a nice, medium-rare piece of dead cow with a hearty red wine...

Of course, the wine is French, thus negating the right-wingedness of the beef. If beef even has political affiliations.

12. Funny how vegetarianism/veganism has become associated with "left-wing"
Wasn't Hitler a vegetarian?

I know that many vegetarians do so out of concern for the environment or animal "rights", but I think even more people do it for their health or because it's trendy in some areas. I've met many a vegetarian who is completely clueless about politics, though if they ever got involved, they might be left-inclined.

I love beef, and I think it's less cruel than chicken, since one head of cattle produces hundreds of servings compared to a chicken.

The deforestation problem is an issue, and because of that and the cholesterol, I try to cut down.

I'd be willing to bet that the percentage of people who are vegetarian in both parties is less than 5%.

22. yes, hitler was a vegetarian
It may be an urban legend, but it's said that when he came to power, he enacted a law forbidding the boiling of live lobster, since lobster is said to scream when it's boiled.

As far as the environmental thing, I would lean more toward chicken than beef. Reason: Many veggies argue that producing meat requires a greater amount of grain and water than producing an equivalent amount of grain. This may or may not be true, and *some* beef is certainly raised on land where grain or vegetables could not be grown, but I have no way to know which beef is the beef being grown on marginal lands and which beef is actually using valuable farmland or wildlife resources. I still eat beef on occasion but I can accept that there is a sound ecological reason not to eat it.

But what about chicken? I just don't see any reasonable ecological environment against consuming this valuable food. Chickens eat crap that humans cannot efficiently or healthfully eat. They create valuable protein almost out of nothing. I have raised chickens, and they ate insects and table scraps. Commercial chickens are converting such things as protein from euthanized pets and restaurant waste into food. They do not compete with us or wildlife for resources. So if you want to be ecologically correct, and you care about wildlife, you would be much better off eating chicken and eggs than consuming soy, which creates agricultural desert and is responsible for habitat destruction that affects our native wildflowers (many close to extinction), birds, butterflies, and other native wildlife. Chickens aren't deforesting anything but soy and other grains most assuredly are.

25. That may be true about chickens, but
layers are kept under duress (lights continuously on) for nearly their entire productive lives (which aren't very long). Plus, mega chicken farms have a tendency to produce a large amount of excreta which often ends up in surface or ground water.

30. This isn't an argument against eating chicken or eggs per se,
It's the factory farming of animals that causes it.

If we're going to eat meat (and I do, but feel slightly guilty about it) we should support farming methods in which the animal can live an OK life before it dies. I could use more information about how to do so.

40. left wing vegan humor mishap
i made a joke about vegan carniverous plants on the carneverous plant chat, "can flytraps eat tofu", well....... i reeally didnt think i could have ignited that sort of rage with a flame thrower. if you think the PETA people are extremists, mention tofu in a bar. i eat fish, and chicken once in a while. i DO NOT eat beef. the canadian mad cow came from the usa. exposed 47 herds. independant researchers on NPR said they took tests from alshimers patients in care homes and 12% showed misdiagnosed spongiform disease. there is what is called downed cows, beef that is too sick to make it into the slaughter house, they fall down, get up, fall down, get up, fall down and cant get up..then they are a downed cow, downed cows were allowed to be fed to non-agricultural animals..mink in MI and MN, the mink got spongiform disease from the downed cows, escaped and spread it to the deer in the wild, they spread it in the herd by licking each other,in what is now called the RED ZONE, thousands of square miles. salt licks on BLM grazing land for beef cattle attract more deer than cattle. in 1948 a small flock of sheep got spongiform disease, the goverment cremated them at 2200*F and the ashes would still infect healthy animals, it is also called PRION disease, can go inter species in just a few generations. the ashes are being kept in high level radioactive storage areas to keep them from being accidently dumped. people in europe dont lick stamps anymore.

47. It's not just "deforestation"
Edited on Tue Jul-08-03 09:44 AM by SiouxJ
the waste that these large factory farms produce is being dumped in the ocean and killing off everything there. The entire ecosystem is dying there. Hog farms are a major problem in the south. This is a good link:

http://www.nrdc.org/water/pollution/nspills.asp

on edit: this is why I think vegetarianism is seen as a Dem thing. We care more about the environment than repukes.

She'd be on D.U...her user-name would be Annthrax... we'd all laugh about the tales of her misspent youth...I'd help her through the deprogramming...she'd prostrate herself in front of all liberals and beg forgiveness...she'd serve seven years of penance to make up for all the damage she's done to the world...I'd hold her hair back while she threw up after each meal...

Just letting my inner co-dependent out for a romp. Sorry. Let's pretend that never happened.
