Pope's car a heavenly ride, says new owner
Berlin - Interest in a Volkswagen Golf formerly owned by Pope Benedict XVI has smashed all records for a German Internet auction site, with nearly four million hits.

"It was viewed more often than any other item we have ever had on eBay Germany," the Berlin headquarters of the company said on Monday.

The bidding for the 1999 Golf IV, which is in mint condition, started at the equivalent of R79 000, and by Monday, with more than 136 registered offers, had reached R494 500.

With the auction not due to end until Thursday - Ascension Day - eBay expects the price to continue to rise.
