2. It is just a JRE upgrade...probably to 1.5.
I am a java programmer. So, no worries there.

10. Well, many websites use java for interactive websites...
You can go to many java enabled websites. Here are some fun qwirky ones as an example (by the way go to the homepage and checkout his Lego works!)

http://www.ericharshbarger.org/java/

There is a new update of the java virtual machine. This will make applets faster, among other good things. When you click on the update it should tell you what it wants to do. I update all the time (it's my job). If you don't feel comfortable with it, that's cool, all your applets and java stuff will run. This update for me has sped up many things. Plus, Sun Microsystems, creators of java, is a democratic company! (buyblue.org)

Java btw is also used by IBM, BEA, Oracle, sometimes Microsoft, and a galaxy of companies.

4. It SO screwed up this desktop
I just disabled the "update notification," and used GoBack to restore my computer, and all was well.

No more Java updates for me.

9. Some dumbshit web designer probably thought java was still cool
used an applet, which triggers that pig java to heave itself into your memory and load it's own icon.

13. Excluding the president, everything does. :)
Java is web apps, applets, enterprise, desktop application and on well over a billion wireless devices. But it's not like I am a zealot about it or anything. :)
