10. I made it once.. It ended up being very expensive and not worth the effort
I'd rather just pay $4.50 for a huge jug of it.

There's some excellent Vietnamese resturants about 10 blocks away from me.

But for me tonight, it's DiGiorno pizza for dinner.

6. Pho is my favorite food period
It's life-giving. I don't do the tripe or tendon though, just the thin, raw beef and sometimes the well done beef. I'd get meatballs more often, but they don't give me enough for the price.

I can smell it a block away from the restaurant. I don't even like anise that much, but I love the smell of pho as a whole.

15. boy, does that pho bo look good!
my favorite vietnamese dishes are (in no particular order): lemongrass chicken, shrimp on sugar cane, goi ga- vietnamese chicken salad made with thinly sliced white cabbage, spring rolls with spicy peanut sauce, both pho bo- beef & pho ga- chicken, sweet & sour soup with shrimp, okra & tomatoes.... oh so many choices, and all soooo good!

Your thread is making me hungry for guess what? :bounce:

36. yummy!
those pics you are posting are awesome! as I am writing this, I am eating leftover homemade pad thai-- thai food is another favorite in this house! I live in Houston, and there is a very large Vietnamese and Thai community here. Downtown, the streets even have 2 street signs for every street: one in english, one in vietnamese... sooo we have many, many authentic markets where one can purchase the ingredients easily. Have self-schooled myself in making my favorites. But there are also many, many wonderful corner pho restaurants and many vietnamese and thai restaurants to choose from...

What did you end up getting for dinner?

20. Gotta be Pho
There's a really great Vietnamese restaurant here in Durham run by a husband and wife. He works the cash register and she cooks.

I swear she makes THE BEST soup stocks, ever. SLLLLLUUUURRRRRRRPPPP! :D

And I love all the little accutrements you get with it: the lime, the basil, the mint, the hot pepper paste

And everything is just picked fresh.

27. I had the best abalone dish ever in a Vietnamese restaurant
The place was called the Vietnam Inn in La Jolla. The abalone was cut into thin pieces, stir-fried, and served with a lobster sauce. I had Banana Flambé ("Napalm Banana") for dessert.

Now the abs are too scarce, and the restaurant is long gone.

It's basically an omelet with shrimp and sprouts and whatever else they feel like throwing in. I love it.

Some places call it "Vietnamese pizza," which is ridiculous-- there's no breading in it anywhere.

32. My fave pho is w/ a fish fillet. Beef or chicken r okay, but fish is...
AWESOME!!! I add a little hot sauce (okay, a lot), some fish sauce (same deal), a little lime juice, and while it's technically wrong by Vietnamese standards, I like it with basil.

44. Definitely - Bun Thit Heo Nuong
with plenty of the sweet kind of nuuc mam poured over it and of course some hot sauce. Bun means vermicelli. Thit Heo means pork meat. Nuong refers to a type of braising or barbecuing special to Vietnamese meats. To me, it's extremely good.

46. Curried tofu with vegetables and a
side of salad rolls with peanut sauce.

In my neighborhood, there's a little place that makes a soup they call Delta Bowl. Its base contains tomatoes, lemongrass, red pepper, and pineapple, as well as bean sprouts and various other veggies and your choice of tofu or chicken. I've introduced several people to it, and they all find it wonderful.
