2. Cecil Taylor or Art Tatum.
Edited on Fri Apr-29-05 12:52 PM by RandomKoolzip
I've been getting into some Art Tatum recently....and have been on a a "free piano" kick the last few days, too.

But I voted for Ornette in the poll...of course (he shares my birthday! HAve you heard "Tone Dialing," from 1996? You must.)

30. And he was doing things in the 30's that guys like Cecil would
claim as their own.

Richard Grossman was good too....his style is COMPLETELY improvised. He tried to NEVER play the same lick twice, much less a melody.

77. Another vote for Art Tatum
he played piano on a completely different plane than anybody else. No one else even comes close.

I was talking to an acquaintance in LA whose father was a jazz pianist. This guy talked of growing up with Art Tatum and Meade Lux Lewis throwing down piano duels in his living room!

Jazz is such a giant field that choosing one is kinda ridiculous. There are so many different styles of jazz, to start with ....

88. I have to agree----Tatum is virtually without peer on the keys
The first time I heard him I was blown away----how does he play ALL THAT. Then I learned he was f-in blind.

It is like Beethoven composing his 9th Symphony while completely Deaf

9. Mingus hated Whitey more.
Mingus was possibly the greatest composer of the 20th century. No playing moves me like Trane's Impulse! recordings, and that's what I always come back to, but Mingus was the master.

and I can't remember who was on the keys, bass or drums but it is SICK.

I also really like cannonball Adderly. Work Song is an incredible jam. If you get to check it out, find the Paul butterfield Blues band's version of it...with Mike Bloomfield and Elvin Bishop on Guitar, Mark Naftalin on Keys and Butterfield on Harmonica---it is one of the sickest jam sessions ever recorded

I think Cannonball should get more accord, but hey, thats me. I think his parts might be the high light of the album

I am far more adept in Blues and 60's era Soul, but I have some decent Jazz. But its Blues I really love. Just picked up a Bobby 'Blue' Bland collection and a collection of British Blues including a smoking version of Smokestack Lightning done by the Yardbirds with Clapton in '64

50. You REALLY need more than one poll for this question.
Break it up by instrument. Or simpler: winds (sax, trumpet, etc), percussion/rhythm (piano, drums, bass). But one poll isn't enough.

Him or Gene Krupa.

I have some Gene Krupa and Buddy rich CDs that really, really rock. But my fave is Buddy Rich vs. Max Roach---a duel between two drummers, both playing on the same songs but taking their own solos. It is nuts how these guys try to top each other

The version of Sing, Sing, Sing on there just rocks

good call.

But I am much more comfortable talking about Blues than Jazz, and I know you are a Jazz DJ.

Buddy Rich is the best drummer that I could think of, and one of the few drummers who I actually want to listen to play a drum solo

I mentioned Max Roach---he smokes, but I only know him from his duel with Buddy Rich

You just go right back to Saturn where you came from. Sun Ra is awesome! You're right, about the list, but I'm sure he *meant* to phrase the poll in such a way that would get people talking. Isn't that right, honey?...honey?

85. Miles, the essence of cool
His DNA had the word "cool" in tiny little letters imprinted on it.

Also:

Eric Dolphy, Tony Williams, Monk, and Mingus. And McCoy Tyner, and Art Tatum, and of course, Trane.

True fact: I was in Cheraw, SC last week, and it is Dizzy Gillespie's birthplace. As soon as I get the pics, I will post the one of me standing next to his statue in the town square.

99. BENNY CARTER and ART BLAKEY
They both gave overwhelmingly of themselves to the music, played their asses off, stayed around a long time and had enormous influence on up-and-coming musicians. And they did swing!!

101. Of the choices given, it's gotta be Bird.
Pure genius. I dare you to listen to the "break" on "Night In Tunisia" and deny it.

But Coltrane is a damn close second.

Actually, J.J. Johnson's music gives me the most enjoyment right now.

107. Bird is brilliant
But Mingus' cannon cannot be denied. Jazz, Roots, Classical. That man was a genius. If only Bird had a longer life span, he might have done the same.

109. Maybe I'm not deep enough to understand Mingus.
But on the 70th listening I begin to understand Bird. It takes about the same number of listenings for me to understand Trane. Mingus just never did it for me, no matter how hard I've tried.
