I had a Great Movie Marathon last night
most times the movies are so so, but last night I rented:

Auto Focus
Adaptation
Punch Drunk Love

and watched them in that order. I enjoyed myself thoroughly. Great movies, each one in their own way

what are you recent favorites?

1. Heard Adaptation is great!
Tonight, I'm watching Mike Figgis' TIMECODE. Four camera, no edits. Don't know WHAT to expect.

3. My recent favorites
The Whale Rider--young Maori girl in New Zealand would be a natural for next chief of her clan, but girls aren't supposed to be chiefs, or so her grandfather says.

The Eye--After a blind Hong Kong woman has corneal transplant surgery, she starts seeing ghosts. A strangely touching thriller set in a culture where belief in ghosts is still prevalent.

Winged Migration--Stunning documentary about the migratory and other habits of birds. This is way beyond what you see on the Discovery Channel.

4. great choices
my brother saw "Whale Rider" the other day, and said it was very, very good.

The Eye - I'll see it on your recommendation

Winged Migration - I tried to go to the french site, but having a dial up connection, couldn't see it. That's the same one, right?

5. Adaptation was Great...but I didn't totally get the ending!
"Gangs of New York"...killer

"Punch Drunk Love" ...liked it a lot!

"Auto Focus"...I didn't like!

"Catch Me If You Can"...Great Movie

"The Pianist"...definetly worth seeing!

Tonight I've got "Basic" with Samuel Jackson and John Travolta
was recommended to me by the video store guy! Who I talked politics with for about 15 minutes...turns out he hates bush!

I'm getting "Phone Booth" tomorrow..another good prospect!

What else we got?

6. Punch Drunk Love ----
I was impressed with the way Sandlers usual goofy self was taken to another level - the goofy self covers the anger - I liked it.

8. "Punch Drunk Love"...I liked that it had a Happy Ending, too!
And it was really different with all that music and Sandler did a hugely excellent job of the anger thing, Yeah!

And I want to see that "Whale Rider", too! First I've heard of it.

I like anything New Zealand and Australian!

12. I found it a letdown...
...and I'm usually a big P. T. Anderson fan.

As to the "happy ending"...I kept thinking, "How long before she says the wrong thing, he snaps, and she winds up dead?" Nothing particularly happy about an ending where it's clear the male is unstable and violent, however "goofy," if you ask me.

13. Hated Punch Drunk Love
Edited on Sun Jul-20-03 12:43 AM by Lydia Leftcoast
The Adam Sandler character was totally stupid and thoughtless, and not in an endearing way, either.

Emily Watson's character must have had a severe lack of self-esteem to put up with that kind of treatment. If somebody had abandoned me when I was in the emergency room to go off on some crazy-ass errand of his own devising, I would NOT have answered the door when he showed up.

Maybe I've just lived too long to "love" an unfunny movie full of labored gags, one that expected us to find a dysfunctional relationship sweet and "aw" inspiring.

It wasn't just me, either. My Sunday movie group, all ten of us who attended that week, uniformly hated it, both men and women. (We're all over 45, so I guess we've all lived to long to be taken in by the over-romanticized crap in the movies.) We went to see it only because the local critics all said that this was Adam Sandler NOT being obnoxious and actually showing some substance. We all agreed (and we don't always agree on movies) that it was Adam Sandler STILL being obnoxious.

I know that comedy reality is different from reality reality, but this movie didn't even work as comedy reality. I just kept wondering why a seemingly level-headed young woman like the Emily Watson character was masochistic enough to fall for a guy who was stupid and acted as if he was mentally unbalanced.

Maybe it's a young man's unconscious fantasy, that he can be a jerk and beautfiul women will still fall in love with him and forgive all his jerkiness. Maybe that's why so many younger DUers like this film.

10. Punch Drunk Love and Whale Rider
How funny, we rented Punch Drunk Love last night and I JUST got back from whale rider.

Punch Drunk Love- I was ok with it, not stunning. I thought Sandler was just his usual spastic self in a better film. I like Emily Watson a lot, she was good. Maybe I hold PT Anderson to a really high standard...the other thing is that "He needs me, he needs me" song got REALLY annoying after about the first three minutes of it. Seemed to go on forever.

Whale Rider- WOW! What a terrific film this was! Splendid all the way around. This will stick with me for a while, especially the soundtrack, which I must buy. Fantastic acting by everyone in a spellbinding mystical tale. That girl was awesome. My wife cried straight through the last 20 minutes. I got out of the theater not 20 minutes ago, so I'm still digesting it. It was full, and there was a round of applause when it faded to black.
