An amazing child artist. Totally blew me away!
I just found this unbelievable and had to share it. I just happened to catch Craig Ferguson, because I had the TV on in the kitchen, and one of his guests was a 10-year-old child who is supposedly a renowned painter. She showed some of her paintings and I could not believe how technically perfect and evocative they were and how eloquently she explained how and why she painted what she did. This kid is otherworldly and her work is just stunning. I have never seen anything like it or a child who is so gifted, artistically, so mature when she spoke about her incredible work. Just take a look!
:wow:

1. She Is A Remarkable Talent
As one that struggles to make music, I appreciate artistic endeavors and understand that oft times the ability to create is something that truly is a gift, not an intellectual exercise.

We should all enjoy her efforts while we can.

And she was able to explain her paintings so eloquently. Glad that you can identify with her, but I have to say, this did not appear to be a struggle at all for her. She was serene and incredibly well-spoken. I wish I had the video. And she's 10!

4. Yes - I Understand - I Did Not Explain Myself Well
To see this level of artistic expression at any age is an indication of talent that cannot be explained.

It comes from some special place and demonstrates the potential and greatness humans are capable of.

For those of us that must struggle to make art, we come to appreciate these gifts found in others, because we know how hard we work to make our own meager expressions.

6. I also shared this with my friend, who suggested she is a reincarnation
And I do understand where you're coming from. It does really demonstrate the amazing capability of human beings, but I just wish that you had also been able to see and hear this young child. She was serene, sure of herself and matter-of-fact. She was, as I said, otherworldly.

You and I are human, though I don't share your talent. But this child comes from an entirely different place, which I cannot explain. And I'm not implying she's an alien, just from a place we have no explanation for.

7. Exactly, As Humans, Our Attention Is Captured By The World
Edited on Fri Apr-29-05 05:03 AM by mhr
To such a degree that we become prisoners of the description provided to us by others - particularly the limitations.

Occasionally, we meet someone that demonstrates that the described limitations are not the limits we thought they were.

I suspect that many people have untapped gifts that escape expression simply because we believe we are unworthy.

Who knows where her talent comes from; that is really not the point. That her talent exists and that it represents the highest values of expression we aspire to should be a beacon that guides us all.

8. How beautifully you expressed this!
I guess that quality that most amazed me was her youth. There are talented artists in this world, but this was still a small child. And she not only created amazing works but expressed herself so clearly and matter-of-factly. I'm surprised this is the first we've heard of her. "A beacon," is a very fitting description.:-)

9. Thank You For Your Kind Words
I remember a 60 Minutes special about an elderly man that never lifted a brush until after a car accident.

Upon recuperation he began to paint. His style was abstract and expressionistic and was marked by explosive color.

Each piece was unique and profound.

No one could explain how his accident unleashed this creativity. Yet all who saw his work saw it as masterful.

Wherever or whatever that special place is that creativity and expression comes from is to be nurtured and cherished.

I guess that both of these stories prove that there are still miracles in this world. I don't remember this particular "60 Minutes" story, though I usually watch it, but I absolutely believe it. And this child is an absolute miracle. Maybe I should re-think my beliefs on religion, since this little girl said God taught her all she needed to know.

14. Yes, And What We Call God
Is expressed in virtually every ethnic and cultural tradition around the world.

The expression or representation of God may differ between cultures, but the aspirations expressed by a God - Peace, Love, Harmony, Tolerance, Forgiveness - are near universal.

This young girl is yet another example of these universal truths. She serves to remind us all that a greater good is possible.

I'm a member of the Agnostic/Atheist group. Losing my Dad pretty much stomped out any embers of faith I had left. But this amazing child is making me re-think what I think and believe. Her gifts must come from somewhere and she is, as I said, otherworldly, in what she says and believes. She is amazing in her composure and assurance, for such a little child!

5. I know! That's why I had to share this!
She said she began drawing at four, painting at six. And was self-taught, that God told her what to do. The technique, alone, is breathtaking, the evocative faces and the incredible physical details of the horse! Most people study for years to learn such technique! And I wish that you could have heard her explanations of the paintings she brought with her. She totally understood exactly why she did what she did, from the Bible, or understanding of the emotions of the horse she rode, and the need she has to paint people of all races. It totally boggles the mind.

The eyes are just remarkable! And I do wish you could see the painting of "The Freedom Horse," which I don't think is included here, but she had it with her on the show. This child just rode her friend's horse, but had to "get off his back" because she didn't think he like her controlling him. And she painted a perfect horse with muscles and tendons and bones! I was just incredibly impressed! And, if you'd heard her speak, explaining her paintings, what she had to say was far beyond a 10-year-old, or many people I know.

22. I'm as opposed to tendentious material
as you can get, but I have to say, this child is outstanding.

One of my dearest and oldest friends is a science fiction artist, who has won many awards in his career, and many times through the years, I saw a lot of his early work at home. Early in his life, around the ages of 9 and 10, he was painting as well, but his true stride came in his teens, when he began to win awards for his SF work. After the first couple of awards, he began to design book covers, and has done so much over the past twenty-five + years that it's incredible.

He was NOT encouraged by his father, though, and I think that for a long time, that held him back. His mom, on the other hand, did encourage him, and it helped a lot, though with approval from his father, he might have gone into another direction.

Artists hold an unspoken insight in their minds which show that somewhere inside of themselves, there are worlds that most of us will never see. Many of us have grown way too cynical, way too limited in our mental scope to allow the free flowing of concepts, ideas and dimensions to our artistic personas. It is when a child has the ability to show us a fresh approach, that we can see things for the first time through eyes that see more than we will ever know.

As a graphic artist and photographer myself, I find sometimes that the simplest and smallest element of a picture often grabs more attention than what I originally began to focus on. Images that are taken or made with a simplistic approach, but with a fine eye toward execution are surprisingly the images we will always remember for the rest of our lives.

If you read about them a little bit, you would probably see that they aren't fundamental religious types. The girl speaks FOUR languages. Does that sound like a fundy to you?

Sad that anyone would be threatened by a little girl's talent and belief in God.

23. I wonder, though, if her artwork will got through crisis if her faith does
If she as a teen decides that her family's faith is too constrictive, will her art die alongside of her faith? (I hope not, and I don't mean to imply that she only has the talent if she uses it for God, just that I think those kinds of crises can cause brain and soul freeze. *Speaking as an author in permanent writers block. *sigh*)

I hope she doesn't endure a brain/soul freeze from it, but it would be interesting to see how her art responds to any doubts or questions she might have about her faith later on. Religion or no religion, prodigy or not, the teenage years suck. I'm curious how her frustrations will manifest in her art.

52. In the "Her Life" section, they say Mom was an athiest
and Dad was Native American. According to this official site, the girl had a religious conversion at four (?) or six years of age and this converted her family to Christianity.

But values do change with time. It will be interesting to see how her faith and work might change as she grows older. And it's also worth noting that many, many Christians are liberal folks. Many Christian households are loving, warm, tolerant places to be.

The works are extraordinary for a child that age, I agree.

26. that's not an explanation
that's a pseudo-religious hyper-sentimental form letter. And I really don't find anything interesting about an articulate ten year old, child stars always look precocious- she's been groomed for public consumption.

yes, there's some technical skill here, but she doesn't say anything (one of the points of painting is to replace words, the painting should tell you everything you need to know about the meaning of the work, having to explain it means the painter failed to do that)

yes, technical skill, but no artistic temperment. nothing is being created beyond formulaic propaganda. She needs about ten more years in the oven to mature and let herself catch up to her physical skill.

37. That's where I come down - technically good, but not very artistic
BUT - she's only ten; hasn't experienced much of life yet, and her religiosity makes me think she has a fuyndy family, and so she might never experience much of real life but go through life with rose-colored glasses refusing to notice or see the suffering of the world, nor to witness it in herself.

formulaic propaganda is right - someone else said "not much different than the unicorn paintings at the mall". Both statements are right.

I hope, though, that she will mature and grow. She's got the talent and the technical skills - if she can develop and inner eye, and develop something more to say than "Christ good, everything else bad", she can be one serious artist.

Part of me thinks, though, that her family will make sure that doesn't happen, and she might be relegated to making Christian art for the rest of her life. She will likely get rich at it, but she might never become a serious artist. Instead of letting her go to NYU or a school in Paris to study art, she'll be forced to go to the Thomas Kinkade School of Art Appropriate For Saved People.

I find articulate 10 year olds to be very interesting. The particular painting I posted may not have spoken to you, but others on the website do a wonderful job of replacing words. I don't know who's place it is to judge one's artistic temperament, but I see incredible work created by a child prodigy and I think it's amazing and beautiful. So what if her inspiration comes from her religious beliefs? People have been inspired by their religion throughout the ages, that doesn't make their art any less valid.

39. I think you misunderstood me
I have no problem with art inspired by faith, quite the opposite, in fact (most classical art is after all, inspired by religion and faith) She's being merchandised, I looked at the site, nothing there that would inspire me to hang it anywhere but a waiting room. Art should inspire you, it should make you think of something in a different light. There are ten thousand technically skilled painters in the world, how many will hang in museums? 25? 30? in an exceptional century, 100? why is that, you think? are those 100 more talented? more technically skilled? or did they just have something to say the other's didn't?

I will grant that this young woman has technical skill. but it's not fine art, something that tells a story in a different or better way than others, it has no real vision. Maybe she will develop that, as of now, it's not there and she is being commodified, turned into a paining factory for the enrichment of others around her. That's fine as well, but rarely do commercial success and continued artistic development inhabit the same simultaneous space. If you paint for the mass market, then that determines your painting, and you become Thomas Kinkaid, Andy Warhol or even Picasso, promising, talented artists who ran out of things to say and just kept selling.

24. She seems fascinated with eyes
All of her earlier works seem to have very prominent eyes and, in her later works, the eyes show intricate detail.

My 13-yr-old is also very interested in art. She can sketch a human form in nothing flat and then she'll spend hours on just the eyes. She tells me that the rest of the body is easy... but eyes are complex, holding the present, future and past in one glance. Although my daughter isn't Christian, she does have a certain spiritual relationship with her art.

Anyway, thank you very much for the link. I can't wait to share it with my daughter. She'll adore it.

85. Forget the Christian aspect and just look at the faces.
And the animals. I was most impressed by "The Freedom Horse," which was one of the paintings she brought with her on the show I saw. Horses are notoriously difficult to draw. I'm not religious and just don't understand how this got turned into a religious argument. I now regret posting this. *sigh* I was just blown away by this young child's talent and wanted to share it with someone, at this late hour. But, even in The Lounge, things have become political and acrimonious.:-(

40. Incredible technical skills
for a 10-year-old, in service to (my opinion) a thoroughly kitsch aesthetic. It will be interesting to see how she develops. I'm impressed, but there's something a little creepy about it all, too.

92. Yes, it is that, as are her descriptions of her paintings.
But this child is 10, remember. That's the only reason I posted this, just because I was amazed at her technical expertise at such a young age. The subject matter eluded me, until I got flamed on this thread. I'm assuming she'll mature and change, but, for now, she's still just a kid.

46. interesting
it could all be a scam.

Somehow, I'm put in mind of Jeanne D'Arc, who made a significant mark in history, but whose story remains inexplicable. She said she was instructed - led, by God as well.

I looked as some of the paintings, and admire her talent. I also read the biography of her on the site. Based on that, I would discount the "fundy" accusations being bandied about on this thread.

What lies in her future? I have no idea. Hopefully she will not meet the same end as Jeanne.

The only aspects I admire about any religion are hope, kindness, and love.

For those who are certain this is all a scam, I will recall the words of Will Rogers: "I would rather be the man who bought the Brooklyn bridge, than the man who sold it."

:hi:

48. Technically talented but something feels weird about this
I looked at the site and read a bit about her...

She supposedly "converted" her whole family to christianity when she was 4? Now perhaps this is true and I am a cynic but the web site has a funny feel about it for me...

I suspect that she has been artistically trained by her mother or father and that is wonderful...but I tend to believe this is a great set up to make money...

Mozart's father made a mint off his prodigy and these parents have figured out that this kind of talent is worth more when there is a child behind it.

Once again I am not saying that she isn't artistic or talented.

54. yeah I also agree something's off here....
her poetry seems so overly precious and contrived...the art is technically good but lacks self-reflection and seems somewhat shallow...this would be all well and good if there was an element of innocence, but it seems to just be parroting Christian allegory. Like someone else said I'll check her out when she's a conflicted adolescent, her art should be much better then.

And by "Person of Faith", of course we all know I mean "Christian".

Since it was painted by an Artist of Faith(tm) (I'm sure Kinkade or Akiane or someone will trademark that soon), that must BE INCREDIBLE ART!

AND IT IS!!

That's amazing!! The precision, the depth of field, the perspective, and especially - THE JESUS! - make it a perfect, wondrous painting!!

The only thing better would be if this was painted by a 10 year old Artist of Faith(tm)!

And I also know where you stand on Thomas Kinkade, LOL! My point was not the subject matter, as you must have figured out, but that this is a 10-year-old kid. I just thought her skill was remarkable for a child, that's all. And I wanted to share my amazement with somebody else. I know you're an artist, but I'm hopeless when it comes to art, except appreciating it, and I could never aspire to anything like this. And who could support anything described as such, especially a child, who has no understanding of politics or sex or women's issues? This is just unconscionable. If I was her parent, I would have been incensed and told them that this was totally inappropriate. They were irresponsible. This is about art, and her talent, not politics.:grr:

http://stpeters-trenton.org/vm/index.asp?vm_id=24&art_id=25175

Although LifeSiteNews.com was reluctant to ask Akiane about abortion, her mother was very open to the notion. When the subject of abortion was broached Akiane first said she did not know what it was, but her mother reminded her that it was "the killing of babies still in the womb of the mother." When told that the practice goes on in the U.S. and Canada and most of the world she responded emphatically, "Really that's bad." She added, "I can totally help, I will help them no matter what."

Why would anybody discuss such a thing with a child?! And her mother should have told whoever asked this question that it was just inappropriate. What is wrong with the mother? That was a nice article, until I got to that part. I am sure that this child has no real understanding of what this question meant, until it was described to her, as it was, and who would have responded otherwise, when told this? I certainly understand the reason she answered, as she did, and she may carry such beliefs into adulthood. But she should not be expected to face such questions at age 10. She may be precocious, but she's still a child.:-(
