Kilt-wearing student banned from prom
Press Association
Wednesday April 27, 2005

An American teenager was banned from a high school prom parade after he turned up wearing a kilt.

Eric Schulzentenberg was stunned when school chiefs in Alexandria, Minnesota, ruled his Highland dress did not comply with their dress code.

Male students are required to wear trousers and John Peterka, the school superintendent at Osakis high school, ruled that the kilt fell into the "shorts" category.

The 17-year-old student, who is not a pupil at the school, was given the option of changing into a pair of jeans before entering the event earlier this month.

2. later...
the school department was later schocked to learn that a boy named "schultzenberg" believed himself to be from the Scotish highlands.

12. Erm, it is within the realm of possibility he
had a male ancestor a hundred years ago with that name and was otherwise entirely Scottish.

Who might very well have been Scottish.

33. Particularly ironic
As the traditional right to wear a particular tartan passes through the maternal line.

9. No wonder we're fucking the world up...
"...He said: "They should be able to accept other cultures and other ideas. That is what education is all about..."

Apparently, the only one who is allowed to support and participate in other cultures, is the chimp, when he's hanging with oil-rich Saudis.

13. Wait a minute....
am I getting too old? They banned him from the PROM for wearing a kilt but would let him in wearing jeans? To the PROM? Not that I give a shit one way or the other but since when were jeans considered OK to wear at the prom? I would think a kilt would be much preferable to a pair of jeans. Shit, girls couldn't even wear pants to school when I was in high school and jeans would have gotten you suspended on a regular school day.

16. Kilts are quite popular in NC
A LOT of us native whities are of Scots descent, so kilts are normal here. It might be a bit unusual at a prom, young people aren't so much into it, but I don't think anyone would be kicked out for wearing one.

The men of one family at my church regularly wear kilts at most ceremonial occasions.

I LOVE MEN IN KILTS! :D

20. To damn right
A man in a kilt is one of the most beautiful sights on this planet.

There are a few photographs of me in a kilt - but if I posted them nobody would believe us at how gorgeous men can be in them.

25. It's a terrible picture - you'll regret asking.
I couldn't find the one I wanted so had to use this one. It's an odd shape as it is taken from a group shot.

I look quite horrendous - my shirt is a mess, my tie askew, and the scanning makes it look about 20 years old.

18. People REALLY need to get a grip.
Kilts are NOT shorts, they are kilts. And kilts can be VERY dressy.

Idiots.

Now if he was wearing a utilikilt, that's not quite as dressy. LOL!

(Google utilikilt, they are really pretty cool.)

When did that happen? But the man's traditional formalwear is not ok? He was probably the best-dressed person there!

23. Jeans are preferable to a kilt at a prom?
Isn't a prom a formal event? Wouldn't his Highland dress be more appropriate?

Of course, I know the Osakis area, and I'm not surprised.

27. Picture of the teen in Kilt
From another news article at WCCO.com

Kilt Story

Looks like a dress formal Kilt to me. The same type that a groom might wear to his wedding. It's disgusting that he be banned for wearing this.

30. Looks like a Bonnie Prince Charlie jacket
Though I can't see it terribly well from that angle.

In standard dress etiquette Bonnie Prince Charlies is taken as equivalent to white-tie, which is a very significant step-up from what most would be wearing. The only other thing it could be is Marquess of Bute, which is equivalent to black-tie.

It's obviously a real kilt - and there's no such thing as an informal kilt. They were invented by the anglo-Scottish Victorian aristos who wanted to be able to wear tartan with formal-wear.

He wears his kilt and full formal kit for weddings, funerals, etc. He's o looking forward to his prom next year, and is begging my sister and BIL for a custom-made kilt.

This is stupid. A kilt is considered formal dress... MORANS!!!
