SIR Elton John is to marry David Furnish, his long-term partner, in what is expected to be one of the most glamorous and extravagant weddings of the decade.
The Oscar-winning musician, who famously spent £293,000 on flowers and once demanded that hotel staff in Los Angeles stop the wind from blowing, will tie the knot in a civil ceremony in December.
The location for the wedding, which is expected to be attended by celebrities such as Donatella Versace, Sting and Elizabeth Hurley, is the singer’s country estate in Windsor.
Sir Elton, a vocal supporter of rights of gay men and women to a legal marriage, announced his intention yesterday to take advantage of a new law, which will permit civil partnerships when it comes into force on 5 December.
The musician, who was knighted for his services to music in 1998, said in an interview about his marriage plans: "We definitely want to do it about the middle of December, probably in Windsor, but there will be no honeymoon. I’m on tour."
Previously, Sir Elton said he had refused to take advantage of the civil ceremonies for gay people that are available in a number of states in the United States, as well as in countries such as Australia.
"I’m not going to run away to Australia and get married," said the singer in an interview earlier this year. "It’s very important that I get married in Britain, because I feel it’s the only place that I could do it."
