I'm starting to hate hispanic art.
Big test tommorow on 100+ paintings from 25 different painters, and I also have to know their country, century, style, and masterpiece. I've been reviewing since the middle of last week and still have a lot to pat down.

Oh, and the entire test is in Spanish.

1. Sounds like a cool class!
Are you an art major or is it a BDR?
Good luck on your test.

5. Goya. Everyone in our class had to give a 15 minute on an artist.

Goya was mine. Nice try. :P I'm suprised the class didn't giggle when I showed that nude painting.

The Third of May is my favorite painting.

Did you know Goya had 19 kids and ended up getting syphilis?

7. I guess that explains why he went mad
and did some rather dark art.
Is that the reason?

12. Not likely that he was syphilitic, from what I've read.
If he DID have syphilis, he probably wouldn't have lived to eighty-two, considering that mercury was the only treatment at the time.

17. Supposedly at age 46.
36 years is a very unlikely length of time to survive with syphilis in the 19th century, expecially without any tertiary-stage symptoms.

19. It depends, upon if he experienced a period of "latency" ?
Causes and Manifestations

Syphilis is caused by an organism called Treponema pallidum, which is a type of bacterium called a spirochete.

Syphilis is characterized by three stages: primary syphilis, secondary syphilis, and tertiary syphilis. Syphilitics often experience a period of latency, in which no symptoms are visible. Syphilis is usually transmitted though sexual intercourse but can also be transmitted from mother to child in utero, a condition known as congenital syphilis.

Primary Syphilis: Primary lesions of syphilis (chancre) form "at point of contact, usually on the genitals," but chancres can appear almost anywhere on the body. Chancres may be so small as to go unnoticed. If they do not become infected, they will heal without treatment within a month or two. Primary syphilis lasts 10 to 50 days (Jones 3).

Secondary Syphilis: While the chancre is healing, the second stage begins, signaled by the appearance of a rash at 6 weeks to 6 months from infection. The rash "may resemble measles, chicken pox, or any number of skin eruptions, though occasionally it is so mild as to go unnoticed. Bones and joints often become painful, and circulatory disturbances such as palpitations may develop" (Jones 3). Oftentimes, the latter symptoms are accompanied by fevers, indigestion, and headaches. Sometimes "lesions develop into moist ulcers teeming with spirochetes, a condition that is especially severe when the rash appears in the mouth and causes open sores that are viciously infectious" (Jones 3).

Latency: Even without treatment, syphilitics will experience a period of "latency," in which all symptoms disappear. This period may last anywhere from a few weeks to 30 years.

Tertiary syphilis: Tertiary syphilis is also called "late syphilis." It is the most acute and destructive stage of the disease: "Gummy or rubbery tumors – the characteristic lesions of late syphilis – appear, resulting from the concentration of spirochetes in the body's tissues with the destruction of vital structures" (Jones 3). At this stage, syphilis frequently attacks the cardiovascular and central nervous systems, which can be fatal. It can attack walls of the heart or those of blood vessels; it can cause heart valve damage, or even aneurisms. Neurosyphilis is characterized by softening of the brain tissues, causing "progressive paralysis and insanity" (Jones 4).

13. Woah? I didn't recall the syphilis? EEK!
And 19 KIDS?!

My sister did a presentation on Goya for her art class and I helped her put it into a powerpoint format ... (which is the ONLY reason) I knew who he was. ;)

and act like you're having a nervous breakdown. You'll get an "incomplete" and that will give you a whole summer to study for the final.

"Take that, Guernica!" (overheard as he ran over the painting in a Sherman tank).
