Talk about something good!
Between the woman getting killed in Afghanistan for adultery and the two toddlers who died in Georgia and Marla Ruzicka dying in Iraq (along with so many other people)...the world looks like a very ugly place to me right now. Does anyone have any good news? New flower in the garden? Feeling better after an illness? New baby? Rediscovered an old song you love? Is the weather getting better where you are?

I'll start: I think I'm a bit closer to getting the grant I need to spend the summer working with an environmental group on saving an Ecuadorian rain forest from destructive oil drilling.

I really want to celebrate something wonderful with people. Let's see if we can bring some light back into the world...

4. Hooray!
I'm really glad to hear that. It's no fun when it's hard to breathe.

(And I love your cat! What's his/her name?)

9. She has very striking eyes
I've always been a dog person (see my avatar, haha) but I think I've grown to like cats more just from looking at pictures of DUers' furry (or hairless) friends. Osiris is beautiful!

2. Checked all my plants after the snow and low temps
and I didn't lose a thing! the snow melted and the tulips and flowering bushes came out perfectly. It is fantastic how resilient they are.

16. Oh, _you're_ the one with that garden?
I've seen it on other threads and always admired it. It must take a lot of work on your part, and the results are incredible. It's amazing what the earth can provide given the right attention.

I live in a dorm now, but if I ever have a yard like that, I don't think I'll ever take a vacation. :) Thank you for sharing it with us.

19. You will have a garden like that some day!
I remember college, raising kids and never having enough time. Best part about growing older is the time for the things you always wanted. I guess I work on it all spring and summer and plan for it all fall and winter. I love it and the beauty it brings. Thanks for enjoying it with me.

26. beautiful and a plant question
what are the foreground plants in the top pict with varigated leaves and tall violet blossoms? I like all the big clumps. I'm in the 2 yr old garden stage and someday will have decent sized clumps as I can afford to start with small ones and let them grow. Of course, I've already having to spread them further apart since I planted them too close so they looked better. sigh.

3. Sunny and flowers and kitten all outside
My 6 month old kitten had her first couple days of being able to go outside and is tired from scurrying around with a bushy tail following the older cat. Flowers are blooming, got new fish in the pond (here racoons) and the salmonberries are also blooming. I had spiced tofu and garlic stuffed olives and water for dinner as my son is at a class late and I can eat whatever I want. Woohoo!

8. Purchases of hybrid vehicles in the US doubled in 2004, and
are still accelerating in 2005.

I had a great short vacation in New York with three very fine people. We saw the Larry Clark exhibit at the International Center of Photography, the exhaustive Diane Arbus and Max Ernst shows at the Met, the startling and thoroughly engaging Tim Hawkinson show at the Whitney, a beautiful set by Curtis Stigers and his semi-itinerant band at the Jazz Standard, "The Pillowman" at the Booth Theatre (with Billy Crudup, Jeff Goldblum, Michael Stuhlbarg and Zeljko Ivanek).

We walked and walked and walked, and gorged ourselves at Sophie's Cuban Cuisine, Sapporo, the Persian Grill, La Mesa De Espana, Jazz Standard (yes, Blue Smoke Barbecue), and at other stops along the way.

The drinks, company, and glam-racket deejay at the Beauty Bar were all wonderful.

The city still looks good from the top of the Empire State Building.

Shoes, guitars, and cafes are still great in Greenwich Village, and Soho is not without its charms. Ground Zero is serious about that comeback, and Wall Street is frantic, volatile, and exhilarating.

We missed this time Lincoln Center, Juilliard recitals, the Cloisters, Harlem, so much more.

But it is still there, and for now there is still time.

10. More hybrids are great news
How was the Clark exhibit? I've liked his work for a long time, but I didn't even know there was an exhibit up...I should try to keep up with that kind of thing more, I think. :) And the Hawkinson one looked really good. I think I may have to try to get into the city this week. Thanks for the report! :toast:

13. The Larry Clark exhibit was extensive and intense
but the museum was kept extremely hot the morning I was there. Wear a tee-shirt and a sweater you can strip off in case they have the same situation when you're there.

Yes, the Whitney is a treat. Go see the Hawkinson and whatever else of value you can find.

18. This semi-feral (formerly thought to be feral) cat let me pet him tonight-
really pet him! May seem small, but in my world it's truly a wonder. I've named him Buddy.

In this picture he is the cat below. The one above him is Charley. I've never seen two non-neutered toms sitting so apparently peacefully together. That too is cause for celebration!

"In spite of everything, I still believe people are good at heart." If Anne Frank could say it, I can still hang onto it every now and then.

Life is still good, Merope.

22. Doesn't seem small to me at all
We adopted our dog from the pound this summer (that's him in my pic) and he acted semi-feral himself. He still flips out and bites us sometimes, but he's learning to trust us, I think, so I know exactly how you feel. It's such a wonderful feeling when an animal begins to trust you...you feel like you can go take on anything.

Your two guys look very sweet - I'm sure Buddy will make a great companion once he isn't so scared of people. And thanks for the reminder of how important it is to keep our own occasional despair in perspective. to you too.
