they say stuff like "he only knew three cords" or whatever...I've heard this alot.
But damn, what he did with those three cords...
damn, I am watching Carmen Electra on VH-1 and she said that the Ramones perfected the recipe for the perfect punk song : three chords, 2 minutes, and no solos.
I'm there. Plus Nirvana was during the heighth of MTV when the videos were really high art. I remember the video for one of their last singles "Heart Shaped Box" and it was such amazing pure art.
Cobain was like an emotion, a paradigm, or something, and he expressed that perfectly.
I love Eddie Vedder though, that "I'm Still Alive" song is so creepy if you know what it is really about, emotional ( and sexual?) incest, and he hit that chord perfectly.
Incidentally, I am a tremendous fan of Courtney Love, I think she is a brilliant songwriter as well, just like her husband, she knew what to leave in and where to stop. It drives me nuts that people accuse her of taking his songs, there is nothing similar about their writing styles at all. No one portrayed the atmosphere of child sexual abuse more accurately in music than Courtney Love, except maybe Bjork on the song "Birthday" on the old SugarCubes "Life's Too Good" album from the 80's. Courtney's writing is so flawless, she can send me in to flashbacks and make me want to jump off a building. Her songs probably have driven many people over the edge, they give me chills. I wish she'd get it back together.
