Fairy tales linked to violent relationships
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/afp/sciencebritainwomen

LONDON (AFP) - Young girls who enjoy classic romantic fairy tales like "Cinderella" and "Beauty and the Beast" are at greater risk of becoming victims of violent relationships in later life, a British researcher says.

A study of both parents of primary school children and women who have been involved in domestic abuse claims than those who grew up reading fairy tales are likely to be more submissive as adults.

A more senior academic at the University of Derby said the topic was sure to spark debate but merited further research.

Her study, entitled "The Tales We Tell Our Children: Overconditioning of Girls to Expect Partners to Change", will be discussed by many of the world's most influential therapists.

1. In general most romantic fiction/films are poisonous for young girls.

They tell you basically you need a man to save you/make you whole or happy....that men will be chivalrous and ride up on a white horse, that your parents will die and/or don't care about you... that you have to be all sweet and loverly...fairy tales in particular teach such weird things about relationships and people (like Goldilocks just walking into a house).

As Don Henley (who generally I'm not crazy about) says: "We've been poisoned by those fairy tales." Romantic films are little better (though I :loveya: them sometimes).

However, like everything, in moderation they're fine. I don't think they're any more poisonous than anything else. Sigh.
