Law School Finals

Any fellow law school students around that are about to have to have triple bypass surgery at the end of May?

I'm an extremely healthy person but while working on my outlines I found myself eating Krispy Kreme and drinking a beer. Mix in the threat of those damn tests and I might as well schedule my operation now!

P.S. I'm a 1L and have tons of outlines for a bunch of classes and would like to compare them with other schools to see what everyone else is doing and how well the one's I have (for reference only, haha...no seriously) are.

2. Ah...you know how they tell you get through being a 1L

and it's all down hill? Well they are now telling us: Third semester is the worst and if you get through that you are ok.

I'm beginning to understand the closeness lawyers have - the people in school with me have my respect most definitely.

3. I've certainly heard the horror stories

as well as read the book One L, and saw the move Paper Chase. Heart attack city, good luck! You'll do great I am sure. I've been reading some prep books, and have an introductory law class at the college this summer (I've been out of undergrad for 5 years and could use a refresher). Nervous, but excited to start. Good luck to you and please secure all firearms and sharp objects before exam time.

4. Well luckily the Paper Chase is an exaggeration in my opinion.

I do have one professor who comes close. Terrifying little man - but the best teacher I've ever had (and smartest).

6. Ah, the good old days --

graduated in 1987. I found the old saying about law school to be true:

First year they scare you to death
Second year they work you to death
Third year they bore you to death

8. Memorize your outlines

Understand all of the key terminology, concepts and phrases, and how they relate to each other, and write those key words and phrases all over your answers to the exam questions. Also, define them in your answers. Analyze carefully the fact situations with which you are presented in the questions, and clearly state your conclusions.

a key term got a point...kinda ridiculous to me but I'll play the game.

9. IRAC

In most law schools that's the key to a good essay test result.


I - Issue. You need to identify and state the legal issue, or issues, posed by the question. Do this clearly, and up front: "The issue posed by this question is what type of estate is created."

R - Rule. State the general rule, or rules, that apply to the issue(s). This may be a set of elements, a three-part test, etc. Case cites to the rule are good, but not really necessary.

A - Analysis. Analyze the facts as they apply to EACH issue and rule.

C - Conclusion. Reach a conclusion based on the analysis. This is the least important step, as all but the clearest of cases will have at least two sides which can be argued to a logical conclusion. Don't omit it, however.

Write the essay with that kind of structure and you should do very well. It also makes for a very easy method to outline the answer before you begin writing.

If there was a DU when I was in School, I would have stayed away from it as much as possible during finals, like dope. The two in their natural state just do not mix that well.
