Contraceptive Sponge to Return to Market

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/fda_contraceptive

TRENTON, N.J. - The Today Sponge contraceptive, pulled from the market a decade ago, will soon be back in U.S. stores after receiving regulatory approval.

The Food and Drug Administration on Friday approved U.S. sales of the sponge, which was a popular nonprescription birth control product among women when it was withdrawn from the market in 1995.

FDA spokeswoman Susan Cruzan confirmed the approval, saying "The product was found to be safe and effective."

In Canada, where the original Today Sponge was only on the market about 18 months, more than 400,000 sponges have been sold through retail outlets and Internet sites — without any advertising — since they were approved for sale there two years ago.

7. The kind of story that makes you proud to be an American

--NOT!!!!

Allendale bought rights to sell the Today Sponge...from the prior manufacturer, Wyeth...then called American Home Products...(who)...stopped making the sponge rather than upgrade its...manufacturing plant after FDA found deficiencies there, even though the device's effectiveness and safety were never questioned.

...In Canada, where the original Today Sponge was only on the market about 18 months, more than 400,000 sponges have been sold through retail outlets and Internet sites — without any advertising — since they were approved for sale there two years ago.

Let's hear it for free enterprise! You're free to take a product off the market just to stick it to the FDA no matter how profitable and effective it could have been! So what if upgrading the factory would have cost a couple of bucks--they could have deducted it as a business expense and recouped the cost a hundred times over by now!

17. Know your partner.
Obviously go with condoms for flings, cheats and relatively new SOs, but for longer-term partners, there's no reason not to get tested and ride raw if you test clean. This, mind you, is an easy thing for me to say given the very low prevalence of HIV in hetero populations of my age group and geographical area. If I were in my 20s and I lived in a larger coastal city, I'd surely be singing a different tune.

11. Why do they have two men posing with the product?
I would think a few smiling women would be more appropriate.

16. Unfortunately, still full of nonoxynol-9
to which many people, including myself, are allergic. I have used a Canadian sponge that conatins ... um, benox-something... which has worked well for me.
