Far be it from me to blame a victim....but
When I read this story:

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20050422/ap_on_re_us/stolen_violin

LOS ANGELES - An 18th-century violin reported stolen from an aspiring performer's car was returned by a man who said he found it in a nearby alley while walking his dog, authorities said.

The man, whose name was not released, turned in the $850,000 instrument and bow to police Wednesday in good condition, authorities said Thursday. They were being checked for fingerprints and were expected to be returned Saturday to 20-year-old violinist Lindsay Deutsch.

Deutsch said a thief pried open a car window and snatched it off the seat while she was grocery shopping Sunday.

------------------------------------------------------

My first thought was: Leaving a violin worth 850k in the seat of car while grocery shopping? I'm glad she got it back, but still.

1. Yeah, put it in the TRUNK at least, people.
Sheesh. I do this with my laptop and any other bags I have in the car and none of them are worth 850k

4. and put it in your trunk BEFORE you get to your destination
because people watch for people putting shit in their trunks, then walking away. Lock lifters, pry bars. Trunks are not that secure.

5. Who's Lindsay Deutsch?
I mean, a 20 year old with a violin worth $850,000...either has to be rich or talented (or have rich benefactors). That's some "aspiring performer" there.

6. Amazing what people will steal
As a teen, I hitch-hiked all over the country - with that, and being in the Coast Guard, I've lived in or been in all 50 states and on all 7 continents (61 countries over the years) ---- and I took photographs in all of them.

Guess what I had in the back seat of my car when I was going to a get-together with some friends from GEnie, many years ago.

Bleagh, in one fell swoop, I lost every single photograph and negative I owned.

15. Well, I haven't lived there, but I've been there for extended periods
(four to six months) seven times (on polar icebreakers).

9. Funny thing is... this unknown "aspiring" young violinist has just gotten
a lot of free publicity for her own stupidity. America... Land of opportunity.
