3. The only thing good that former head of the FCC, Michael Powell, ever said
or did was call TiVo "God's Machine".

7. Every weeknight I TiVo Countdown and the Daily Show...
(TDS is not on Fridays, I know), and the political shows on Sunday morning (you can fast forward through the parts you don't want to watch), and old movies on TCM, and Deadwood on HBO. Lots of reasons.

5. I have a question about Tivo.
I have directv. They want me to pay them x amount of dollars for a tivo system and x amount of dollars for tivo service.

Can't I just go to an electronics store, buy a tivo system, connect it, and use it?

Do I actually have to pay directv to connect it?

9. The DirecTiVos are actually cheaper, and they have two "feeds"
so you can TiVo two shows at once. With the standalones like I have, you can only watch something you've recorded while you're recording something else.

DirecTiVos are great, I've heard.

14. DirectV Tivo boxes are awesome
I have one and it's one of those things (like the internet or my cel phone) that I'm not quite sure how I ever did without.

20. How much per month do you have to pay for the service?
Once you buy the box, how much do you pay for the service each month?

23. The box will cost me 100...
I'm an existing customer. But I just might go ahead and bite the bullet and buy one. Sounds like something I could use.

thanks for all the info. :hi:

19. Personally I am glad I bought a separate Tivo, because I canceled directTV
and went back to cable. . .so my Tivo is still happily Tivo-ing for me.

6. I'm jealous of people with TiVos.
I work in the evening, and there are a few programs that I would like to see, but I'm too lazy to set up the VCR. I'm such a nut for Law & Order.

11. If I could, I would marry it....
I love it that much. Except I tend to get quite a backlog of shows and I think they have a deal with Fox where TiVo automatically records shows on Fox whether you want them or not. :hi:

17. Hmmm . . .
we haven't had that problem about recording Fox shows.

You can just turn off that feature that records shows it "thinks" you'd like.

25. A deal with Fox?
NOT ON MY TIVO!

Seriously, you can turn "suggestions" off and just check the Suggestions screen every couple of days and pick only what you want. That's what I do.

29. Good. I didn't mean to imply you were unTiVo savvy or anything like that.
Over on tivocommunity.com, newer users often post that their TiVos give them programs they don't want. The ability to turn off suggestions is pretty well hidden in the software!

31. That's cool. I keep mine turned off, although I marvel sometimes at what
the suggestions screen keeps recommending to me. I've had the thing for 2 years and it sometimes comes up with suggestions from outer space! (Although I did clear out my "thumbs ratings" a few months ago and started from scratch.)

12. My ? about TiVo
Is it only for satellite dish owners are can a mere cable user also enjoy the benefits of TiVo? I don't have digital cable--and I hate video tape. It snags, snarls, stretches--perhaps because I reuse the tape over and over, not interested in archiving

18. You can get a standalone TiVo box
no matter what kind of tv service you have. They have the 80 hour boxes for sale for $100 on tivo.com

Service is $10/mo or $299/system lifetime for standalone.

Your cable service may have a knockoff availible, but it's probably for digital cable only.

16. A couple of people who've stayed as guests at my house have
subsequently gone out and purchased a Tivo for themselves because they saw how cool it was to be able to pause and instantly replay regular TV at any time and be more selective about one's TV watching.

I'm not a big TV watcher but this is something I will definitely have to think about.
