Are we talking rubber monster suits, or what?

1. Can you go wrong with lovecraft?
I don't know. I wish they'd just called this one "The Dunwich Horror." Given that it takes place in Europe though, maybe that wasn't feasible.

2. Did you see "Dagon"? Also, there is a "Dunwich Horror" movie. Bad...bad...
Every Lovecraft-based flick I've ever seen has been either bad or campy...and bad.

Don't know why I referenced Dunwich.

26. Yeah, but there was no mermaid sex in "S over I"
No sex anywhere, really. Cthulhu was sort of weirdly vaginal, but beyond that...

12. It's not super mega cheap
It had *some* budget - but it's like a movie that has no idea
where to put it's money.

The actors are dreadful (I kinda like the male lead in a Bruce
Cambellish way however).

The plot is bad - even for Lovecraft.

The effects are laughable - not cheap but just stooopid.

I paid about $8 for it on DVD and I'd sure like to get that back :D

It's actually a groan-a-minute crapfest :7

The climax with the ritual sacrifice by demonic fish-beings and
the slimy nude victim are worth the price of admition alone :D

edit: and the man/mermaid sex is something different too!

It is still complete crap though :7

>>>and the man/mermaid sex is something different too!<<<

I must have been 13 or 14 and I recall my parents going to bed and watching some AWFUL movie on "Showtime." Can't remember the name or what it was about but I know there were mermen running around trying to mate with surface chicks. I remember being nervous about my parents waking up because there was your typical gratuitous nudity in it. (The real reason I was watching it)

4. It's got some good gross-out moments.
The lead "mermaid" character's facial expressions look like a special effect in and of themselves.

There are no bloody mermaids in any of Lovecraft's works. Dammit.

and they aren't exactly attractive. Lets say if you had your choice between a Deep One and Anne Coulter, you would go with Anne in a heartbeat.

PS Though come to think of it Anne does look like she had the taint of the Deep Ones about her.

27. The Deep Ones still didn't screw anyone.
At least, not in any scene Lovecraft wrote. The guy was pretty weirdly asexual.

cross-breeding. I remember reading a quote from his wife who desribed their sex life as "wonderfully adequate."

He hated all fish. He also had a condition where his body would take on the temperature of the surrounding air. People described shaking hands with him was like shaking hands with a corpse.

8. Is this the same movie
that was a scifi channel premiere a couple years ago? If so then it's ok, but then I have never seen a really good adaptation of an HP Lovecraft story...The dread just isn't there for me.

But, really, once you've seen "The Thing," do you really need to make "At the Mountains of Madness"?

10. Practically all of the film adaptations of Lovecraft's work suck
The only one I can think of that doesn't is "The Unnameable." Though its a bad movie its fun in a bad movie way. A pretty good film though not based on any of Lovecraft's work but an homage nevertheless is "In the Mouth of Madness." It is the best film out there to give you a feeling for Lovecraft.
