I just had a wisdom tooth removed and want to cry like a baby
Seven minutes of twisting and pulling, "okay?" "You're okay, right?" and finally my lower jaw gave up the tooth. I stubbornly kept all of my wt and had no problems for a long time--I am in my early thirties-- until one of my wt that had been under the gumline was partially exposed.

It led to a minor infection and I had to have the tooth above it removed so as to stop the abrasion that led to the swelling. I got the top one removed and it was 1-2-3 out, literally. This dentist is pretty good. This time, though, was completely different. Ouch! It hurts already. What the heck am I going to do when the novacaine wears off?

1. Did they not give you drugs?
Not that I'd know, mind you. I never had wisdom teeth to begin with.

I would be asking for drugs. :evilfrown:

4. Been there
Hurt like hell.

Take some drugs & go to bed. That's the only thing that helped me.

9. It's just after one pm here
and such a beautiful day... I don't want to go to bed now! I can't drink any alcohol today and I can't exercise (both will prevent clotting) so I just have to mope all day with my pain. Ow!

I was knocked out cold, but I ate jello and broths for at least a week.

I hope you have some meds.

11. Next week I am going to go through your pain
the dentist is going to pull back my gums and clean underneath them. He said I will hurt for 3 days. I'm stocking up on tomato soup and milk this weekend. The only way I eat tomato soup and enjoy it is by adding milk rather than water.

I am beginning to feel your pain.

22. I have gum disease or whatever you want to call it
to save my teeth guess the procedure is necessary. I'm not afraid. Just don't look forward to someone poking in my mouth. If only I was a few years younger.

My advice, floss, floss and floss, than brush and brush and brush. Don't skip a time, just do it.

17. Good lord
Best of luck with that, it doesn't sound so good. I love tomato soup with milk though! Haven't had it for about ten years as I live in Japan and I haven't seen any Cambell's soup here yet.

20. My bottom two both got compacted
or whatever, I was practically just crunching on pain medicine.

We had a school holiday on a Monday, and I had the surgery then and was back at school the next day. I was so drugged up, I'm sure I shouldn't have been driving.

But my dad felt so bad for me. (My parents were divorced then, I lived with my dad, but was at my mom's to recover.) He came over and brought me a banana milk shake (my favorite).

10. The older you get, the worse it is.
I had two surgically removed, was bruised from my jaw down my neck and cried like a little girl.
If your pain continues past a day or two, call the dentist. You may need a pack in the socket and some more painkillers.
I hope you feel better soon.

14. Holy smokes, bruising?
I think I may have a puffy face for a day or two but that is all. How did you get bruises? That's terrible.

19. Puffy face and bruises.
Very visible ones.
I think it was because they were impacted and had to have them removed by a surgeon. No complications either. I was 36 when I had them out and, by then, the roots are fully developed. That makes for a longer recovery.
The bruising took about a week to clear up. I have one more left that is completely sideways and hope it never acts up.
The pack the surgeon gave me really helped with the pain.

12. Hopefully he gave you some pain pills. I had one side done and it
wasn't to bad. Just black and blue for 10 days. I went back and had the other side done and it was hell. I mean hell!!!!! I was in the ER before the night was out because the Demerol pills weren't working. You have all of my sympathy!!!!!!!

18. I had a molar extracted a week and a half ago.
It was quite stubborn, and it took quite a bit of leaning, bracing, twisting, wiggling, pulling, and brute strength to get it out. I had cuts inside my cheek and lip from the tools. The extraction wound was sore for about three days, but my gum, bone, and cheek hurt quite a bit longer.

I got through the first day with Vicodin and Advil the next few days. It was three days before I ate anything other than soft foods.

In other words, I sympathize. Did they prescribe pain medication for you?

(As for my wisdom teeth, they were all impacted and I had all four surgically removed when I was 22. That involved general anesthesia and stitches - and later, stitch removal. I had it done on a Friday and barely got off the couch all weekend. I stayed at my parents' house and my brother fetched me jello and ice cream and rented movies.)

21. It sounds hokey, but it works: colloidal silver.
My parents are all new-age and stuff. They recommended I swish some colloidal silver solution (available at new-age stores) around in my mouth twice a day after I had a wisdom tooth extracted. My oral surgeon said he was amazed at how quickly I healed.

I've recommended this to other people and it does seem to work.

23. Thanks for the tip
Unfortunately, we don't have new-agey type stores around here...

Interesting how in the States most people go to a dental surgeon for extraction of wt below the gumline. Here, they just shot me up w/heaps of novacaine and cut right in. I hope my healing goes well -- I will be back for a looksee in a few days.

24. Good luck. I know that wisdom teeth can hurt like a bear.
The way it was explained to me, oral surgeons do most of the wisdom tooth extractions here because there's a major nerve that runs along or inside the jaw right where the wisdom teeth are and damaging it is considered a bad thing. Really, all mine did was numb me up with novacaine (I think they use Zylocaine now), break it in half, and pull it out.
