Best Neil Young Song Ever?
Ever since his brain aneurysm (and successful operation) I've been dragging out my old Neil stuff and giving it all another listen. It's been a while since I gave him any time, but I'm glad I did.

My candidate for his best song ever? "Albuquerque," from the "Tonight's The Night" album.

An epic song about someone fed up with all the bullshit in his life, and desperate for something even vaguely authentic.

1. I always had a soft spot for
The Needle and the Damage Done because of many friends who went down that path.

8. Blue in Ak, I am sorry about their experience because --
-- it must have hurt you to lose them like that.

"Needle and the Damage Done" is to me a one-of-a-kind song musically. The lyrics tell a fairly familiar story, but the music seems to come from out of nowhere and goes right into my brain.

The guitar playing he does on that one has a hypnotic hold on me from the first time I heard it.

4. Cinnamon Girl
My husband is a drummer.

I just love that line - "the drummer relaxes and waits between shows for his cinnamon girl".

5. I originally thought he was singing "I love cooking"
but I agree it's a great song.

And for me I'd have to say "Powderfinger" to answer your question.

24. Cortez the Killer...
Great song, great lyrics.
________

He came dancing across the water
With his galleons and guns
Looking for the new world
In that palace in the sun.

On the shore lay montezuma
With his coca leaves and pearls
In his halls he often wondered
With the secrets of the worlds.

And his subjects gathered ’round him
Like the leaves around a tree
In their clothes of many colors
For the angry gods to see.

And the women all were beautiful
And the men stood straight and strong
They offered life in sacrifice
So that others could go on.

Hate was just a legend
And war was never known
The people worked together
And they lifted many stones.

They carried them to the flatlands
And they died along the way
But they built up with their bare hands
What we still can’t do today.

And I know she’s living there
And she loves me to this day
I still can’t remember when
Or how I lost my way.

He came dancing across the water
Cortez, cortez
What a killer.

33. Amen To That!
What is equally great about "Tonight The Night" is that Neil Young credits it with totally undoing the incredible success he had with "Harvest." And in his opinion this was a very good thing.

Another (deliberately?) flawed yet beautiful masterpiece is "American Stars 'N Bars." Great stuff on there. "Old Country Waltz," "Hey Babe," "Star Of Bethlehem," and, of course, the concert classic "Like A Hurricane."

And then there's "On The Beach..."
