Who here remembers the song, "Billy, Don't Be a Hero."
I loved that song. I was like 7 or 8. I remember singing it in the backseat of my Dad's Datsun...

5. Very Good! Bo Donalson & the Heywoods. The lyrics:
"Billy Don't Be A Hero
( Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods )

The marchin' band came down along Main Street
The soldier blues fell in behind
I looked across and there I saw Billy
Waiting to go and join the line
And with her head upon his shoulder
His young and lovely fiancee
From where I stood I saw she was cryin'
And through her tears I heard her say

Billy, don't be a hero, don't be a fool with your life
Billy, don't be a hero, come back and make me your wife
And as he started to go she said, Billy, keep your head low
Billy, don't be a hero, come back to me

The soldier blues were trapped on a hillside
The battle raging all around
The sergeant cried, We've got to hang on, boys!
We've got to hold this piece of ground
I need a volunteer to ride up
And bring us back some extra men
And Billy's hand was up in a moment
Forgettin' all the words she said

8. That song, and the equally horrific "The Night Chicago Died"...
...and "Afternoon Delight" by Starland Vocal Band (prominently featured in Will Ferrell's "Anchorman")...

And Blue Swede's version of the BJ Tomas hit "Hooked On A Feeling" with the "Ouga Chaka Ouga Chaka" intro...

And Olivia Newton John's "Have You Never Been Mellow"...

And don;t get me started on Captain & Tenille.

EGAD.

10. OOOH! I loved "Have you Ever Been Mellow"
"Have you ever triiiiiied..."

My grandmother wouldn't let us listen to "Afternoon Delight." She said it was sinful. Of course, about 30 years later I remember all of the words.

Now that's a cheery song right off the bat.

How about "Shannon" by Henry Gross?

"Shannon is gone, I heard, she drifted out to sea... "

9. I used to love that song...
Now I've got it going through my head, too.

I actually have it on a cassette of 70's music. On the same cassette is Afternoon Delight, Seasons in the Sun, Hooked on a Feeling, and The Night Chicago Died...

Pick your earworm. :hippie:

23. I was just singing that the other day
A friend's dad was telling a story of what happened to him and some Army buddies on leave in 1966 Alabama. It sounded JUST LIKE THIS SONG. But, instead of being hanged, they were fined alot of money. And there was no sister involved. Just some liquor.

and a later one released overseas--that second one is on the soundtrack to Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.

30. Hate the song. Karen Carpenter was a good singer, though
Even if you didn't like the songs she sang. For example, I do not like the majority of the songs Annie Lennox sings... but my god, that woman has a set of pipes on her!

34. How about "Float On" by the Floaters?
I love that song. Just heard it the other day. It's so incredibly bad.

It drives reprehensor mental when I put on the 70s station here. If you ever want to watch a man systematically rip his hair out by the roots....

"Cancer! And my name is Larry!"

It's on Rhino Records' "Have a Nice Day, Vol. 13".

It's in good company with "Rock Me Gently" by Andy Kim and "Midnight at the Oasis" by Maria Muldaur.
