tranquilizers for kitty?

Has anyone ever had to give a cat daily tranquilizers? What for, and how did it go? Side effects?

1. Never daily, but I have for trips

I believe it was a low dose of Valium, but it's been a few years. Have you tried taking the cat to a behaviorist?

3. I don't want to turn this into...

....a big discussion of "how to introduce cats" because we all know HOW to do it, but sometimes the methods just don't work but the cats must co-exist. That's the situation. We're using Feliway. We're using all the tricks. Still have to keep one cat segregated. I'm just trying to think of what MIGHT have to happen.

5. How long has it been?

Mine took about four months before they were doing full-time house sharing, and they still didn't like each other. Still don't, actually.

...one of these four cats in-house (my darling orange marmalade tabby) has a previous history in this regard. When a new and older cat was introduced to our previous household, this tabby declared a jihad against the infidel. We had to keep them separated for a full 18 months.

Now this orange tabby is the newcomer to this new household where three cats live. We've kept him isolated for three months with plenty of time for sniffing at doors, rubbing pheremones on chairs, etc. Today there was a first "two cats in the same room" time, and it was murderous jihad again. None of us have much energy for long-term segregation.

but if it's only the first time, don't give up. Mine were very strictly supervised for the first, eh, 15 or 20 tries when I first introducing them. Actually I was still putting them in seperate rooms when I left for work for probably six months, even though they were full time out and with each other when I was home....

Also have you swapped around territories? I found that helped. Still seperate, but in each others rooms.

9. I'm kind of in the same boat

I'm having some trouble with one of my cats, who's neutered but seems to forget that fact. The Feliway helps certain things but not others. I'm not sure what the next step will be for Papa either, but I'm trying to avoid hormone therapy, as it has lots of side effects. Good luck!

2. We had to give our kitty tranquilizers for awhile.

He had some sort of mental breakdown. Tried to bite off his own tail. We gave him tranquilizers and he had to wear one of those satellite dishes around his head. The only side effect was that he slept all the time (more than cats usually do), and at the time that was a good thing. We ended up having his tail amputated and his was fine for years after that. He was very happy without his tail.

7. He was a very special kitty.

He was my buddy for 17 years. He had his "breakdown" when he was only a couple of years old. He was very happy, and walked very proudly after the tail was gone. Never did figure out just what started the whole thing.

6. My exerience...

I took two of my cats on a four hour trip to our vacation house. Gilbey and Wicket are good buddies and I thought they would like being together. Wicket travels very well. Gilbey howled pitifully the whole trip. Then he howled for a day after we got there. He howled so much even Wicket would have nothing to do with him. He howled all the way home, too.

So I get some kitty tranquilizers for him. 1/2 hour before we head out on our next trip, I give him a dose. He gets groggy fast. We get in the car and his groggy little ass starts howling. We increase the dosage. Now his inner eyelid is closed and he is drooling - and still howling.

We leave him home when we travel.
