Poll question: My feelings about PETA's boycott of KFC are...
Edited on Thu Apr-14-05 04:01 PM by expatriot
Now that i know that DUers feel unanimous in their belief that animals feel pain, I can ask this question.

1. Hey!
If KFC closed, where would I take my dates?

Some of us have to get laid every now and then and don't have the luxury of thinking about chickens.

3. i don't eat much fried chicken
and i go to popeye's when i do. i do try to be good to chickens, tho. i almost always spend the extra $1.50 or so to get the free range, organic, molly coddled eggs. just seems like a small price for a little less cruelty in the world. i know in the great grand scheme of things, it's next to nothing. i just happen to have a soft spot for working moms, even if they are chickens.
i don't generally support peta. but i am glad they got petco to stop selling big parrots.

7. Whole Foods 365 Brand Eggs are cruelty-free and inexpensive
Free-range, vegetarian fed hens who spend their evenings practicing macrame and their afternoons in either yoga or group-therapy. I buy them because they're comparably priced to the chemical nightmares available at Kroger and Publix.

16. Some would argue being forced to practice macrame and yoga...
...is cruel in itself.

But while I don't support PETA on every issue (I know, standard disclaimer) I really think people need to cut them some slack once in a while. For every yahoo they have dancing around in a frog suit, there are a lot of people working behind the scenes to make the meat/egg/dairy industry a little less cruel. This is one example. I just don't understand why some people get so worked up about PETA.

27. PETA seems to be hamfisted when it comes to their campaigns and PR
Pun FULLY intended.

Currently, PETA is apparently targeting black neighborhoods in an effort to discourage the eating of KFC. Previously, they've even compared the Holocaust to eating meat. These sorts of tactis serve to piss people off and alienate potential supporters.

31. I totally agree...
...some of their campaigns have been completely tasteless. But they also have been very effective in exposing arguably isolated incidents of cruelty, and getting those companies responsible to at least pay attention, if not completely change. I just think people shouldn't just write them off completely. They're not nutjobs. They just don't always think these things through.

5. I don't like KFC
but then, I don't do fast food very often and when I do the Church's chicken here has bigger pieces and tastes better.

I think I'll make a chicken curry this weekend.

I don't eat at KFC and don't care what PETA does, so long as it's legal.

9. For the last time
If all of those 26 PETA members do not want to eat my chickens, then OK. Go ahead and go to Popeye's and get ready to puke. Then you will be absolutely sure that animals feel pain.

12. Excuse me, Colonel, but its not just PETA members....
Rev. Al Sharpton has joined up, I just saw him on a commercial that PETA is going to/are running in black neighborhoods.

Plus, PETA's due-paying membership is at 800,000 in the United States... more outside the U.S.

It's easy to see why PETA is so easily marginalized.

Just because you target certain communities in your marketing? I don't understand that.

30. Oh! I get it.
I didn't make the connection, I thought you just thought it was offensive that PETA would have Sharpton do commercials to reach out to the black community. I thought everyone realized that the chicken consumption habits of blacks and whites are the same, right?

25. I haven't protested naked once.
I'll admit that the PETA leadership may have an obsession with exhibitionism but it gets the name out there. it gets people to the website, it gets people to watch the videos and that is all that matters.

On the other hand, I wouldn't avoid eating KFC chicken at any cost.

Go for it, PETA.

I can't stand to see an animal suffer.

28. Aw c'mon...
They're chickens for dam sake. Ain't got no more brains than a dam lizard ennyway, and ain't much better lookin. Cruelty to chickens?

So long as they's clean and ain't got salmonella, I'll eat me the dam chickens. Yew folks jist gotta accept it. Life's tough fer dermestic foul.

That's the everlutionary payoff, see. Chickens, which is dumber than enny other kind of bird and wouldn't servive in the wild ten minnits what with all the foxes, coyotes and hawks, gets to advance their species into the next generation by being decent eatin' fer Earth's dominant sentient race.

Not eatin' 'em is a everlutionary dead-end fer the chickens, git it?

It's like dermestic pigs, cows (which is dumber than chickens, almost) and sheep. If'n we din't eat 'em (or skin or fleece 'em as the case may be), they'd be extinct.
