I weep for the future of music...
"What's the big deal? I was born in 1984 - why would I know who David Bowie is?"

Ð AVRIL LAVIGNE, quoted in Rolling Stone

Egads.

That cannot be a real quote!

I don't know who Avril Lavigne is, so I guess we're even.

3. Probably why David Bowie could care less who she is
And believe me, they'll remember who Bowie is years from now but Avril will be unknown.

4. That's nothing...
How about that new interpretation of "If I Were A Rich Man" by Gwen Stefani? I'm all about taking old material and doing something new with it, be it cutting it up montage-style, or just trying something different, but that tune just plain SUCKS. Unfortunately, it's probably as close to Broadway as most kids will get.

26. TIAA Cref has a great commercial with "Somewhere" as its song
"Somewhere" is from West Side Story. Somehow this song seems very hopeful.

9. Well I'm 48
And I don't know who Avril Lavigne is, nor have I ever heard his/her? music. I also must say I wasn't a huge fan of David Bowie, but of course I know who he is and some of his songs were pretty good.

I thought this might have been a post about classical music, I weep to see the cuts that symphony orchestras have to put up with these days. No one gets to hear the more modern composers, either

10. Please tell me that quote is out of context
If not, she is an idiot! All forms of music have their predecessors and influencers. He definitely influenced rock just like Elvis before him and jazz and blues before that and so on. To ignore from where music came is to lose direction for the future.

23. She mispronounced his name at an awards show
and has been catching hell for it ever since.

So she didn't even have to be influenced by him....only have actually heard his name once.

Even passing curiosity in music would cross your path with Bowie (pronounced BO-wee) at least once.

Again, I say: egads.

15. At 58 years old, People Pay Well Over $200 A Ticket To See David Bowie
perform live in concert. At 58, Avril Levine will be posing nude for Playboy in an attempt to jumpstart her career again, just like Tiffany and Debbie Gibson did. And just like Tiffany and Debbie, it won't work because seeing an aging pop stars pose nude is sad and pathetic, esp. when teen boys ask "Who the hell is Avril?".

That's the sound of me inserting a screwdriver in my ear.

I swear to God, the music industry is dead to me. I have a stack of Beatles, Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, and David Bowie (and I was born in '83, thank you very much) albums, and that's all I really need.

25. Music like Movies, TV, and The News Has Become Part of Corporate America
Homgenized, test-marketed, and designed to maximize profits instead of being a truly creative endeavor. Are there pearls among the swine? Sure. There will always be the one great movie, the one great journalist, the one great band. But the trend is running strong in the other direction.

27. The 90s saw the commercialization of 'music' to the point where
there are no artist, just performers that can be controlled. I think the 60s and 70s showed them that real artist are too smart to be part of the machine that makes the companies 95% of the profit and the talent 5%. I haven't heard anything inspiring in many many many years.

31. I was always a fan of concept albums.
Last artist that really got my attention was Queenschriek (sp), RadioHead, Nora Jones, and Pink. I was a fan of Ozzy during the Randy Roads erra. Alice Cooper, Styx, Led Zep, Foghat are some of the classics I like.

33. You might like bands like...
...Monster Magnet, Nebula, and Sleep, if you like a lot of heavy guitar work with a bit of an acid/head type of vibe. There is a great new band from England called Litmus that might interest you. You also might want to check out bands like The Soundtrack of Our Lives or the Beta Band.

37. Try to .....
...pick up a copy of "Welcome to the Infant Freebase" by The Soundtrack of Our Lives. It's a killer lp and has elements of many of the artists that you mentioned. From All Music Guide:

<That the Soundtrack of Our Lives originally envisioned their debut LP as a 50-song box set speaks volumes about Welcome to the Infant Freebase's creativity and scope — although the completed album contains a mere 20 tracks, the band's dark, dramatic reconfiguration of rock & roll's elemental forces nevertheless echoes the majesty and ambitions of classic albums past. Opening with the brilliant "Mantra Slider," a serpentine epic which, along with the "Let's Spend the Night Together"-rewrite "Blow My Cool," evokes the Stones' late-60s efforts, Welcome to the Infant Freebase goes on to recall everyone from the Doors to Pink Floyd to Led Zeppelin, reinvigorating even the hoariest clichés while somehow managing to avoid the pitfalls of nostalgia; the key is that TSOOL never gives in to irony — their affection for rock's traditions is genuine, and their desire to reinvent those traditions is pure.>

32. File sharing will put that on its head
Record sales are slumping so the artists are making a larger portion of their income touring these days than they used to; there will come a day soon when live performance will count more than studio play. When that day comes, true talent will surface.

I listen to a lot of Jamaican music these days as there is a kind of roots revival with a lot of talented new artists coming up.

36. Once upon a time
one of those ugly-ass NoHo bands did a cover version of "Quicksand," which you will all recognize as one of the more obscure (and more interesting) album cuts from Bowie's Hunky Dory.

Thing is, the lead screamer claimed authorship of it.

Yup, it was obviously the same song, even though the bonehead tried to massacre it into unrecognizability.

And his record company let him get away with it. Nobody at one of the premier "alternative" labels of the '90s was familiar enough with the work of his alternative elders to call this bozo on his plagiarism.

So young Avril is apparently representative of a large faction within the so-called music industry. Maybe she will get a job, after her usefulness as purveyor of ersatz teen angst has run its course.
