Edited on Thu Apr-14-05 10:37 AM by deutsey
Does he still do commentaries for NPR? I haven't listened to NPR in a while...

PS: I read "Me Talk Pretty One Day" recently on a flight to San Francisco.

3. I believe so. He and Ira Glass seem like buddies.
I was streaming This American Life's Very Sedaris Christmas special the other day , from their site, and I nearly pissed myself.

4. His bit about being an elf at Macy's is what got me hooked on him
I think I had read some of his stuff prior to that and liked his style, but the elf story is what made me a big fan.

Fortunately, the guy next to me slept the entire flight, so I didn't feel as self-conscious about laughing.

I keep wishing that David and Amy Sedaris would do a project together sometime. :-)

David Sedaris is a fucking genius. But start at the beginning. "Barrel Fever" is just as funny.

He also does book signing and reading tours all the time.

10. Let's go Chevy shoppin'.....Deals are hoppin'.
Sedaris comes to Chicago often to do spoken readings. I love his books, but you GOTTA hear him read them out loud. His nebbishy deadpan delivery makes every detail sound so surreal.

And his sister, Amy, is funny as HELL. I think I may like her even more.

20. She's on the cover of this month's "BUST" magazine....
I'm thinking more of her deranged talk show appearances. She was on Conan one night, on the same night as Martha Stewart ,and she showed MArtha how to make a grilled cheese sandwich using an iron. I almost peed myself laughing so hard.

She collaborated with two other dudes to make a weird book called "Wigfiled" that's worth checking out.

Plus, she was on "Strangers With Candy." Good stuff.

33. Oh...sorry.
I didn't mean to embarrass you.

You had posted a few messages that included "crying" emoticons and whixh expressed dismay at me and Chavez's cruelty. So as a joke, I included a link to the "Some people want to be offended" thread.

I meant it in the spirit of good-natured banter.....didn't mean to upset you. I apologize.

Edited on Thu Apr-14-05 10:56 AM by SouthoftheBorderPaul
Dress Your Family in Corderoy and Denim. I had it on CD and I think it's funnier than Me Talk Pretty. I have not read Barrel Fever yet though...

I agree though, YOU GOTTA HEAR HIM READ IT ALOUD. His delivery is better than anything you can conjure in your head while reading to yourself.

Edited on Thu Apr-14-05 11:53 AM by skypilot
I've read it twice. The first time I loved how funny it was and the second time I loved how funny it was AND I realized that it is also beautifully written. And no one--NO ONE--swears quite like a David Sedaris character. He makes swearing sound like poetry. Funny poetry.

I met him a few years ago when I worked for Borders Books. I have a Polaroid photo of the two of us.

32. You lucky!
Hearing him on NPR is great... but I can't wait to see him read his stuff... I've only seen him once, on David Letterman, relating his experimenting with some kind of urine-collection contraption. It was, of course, hilarious.

30. If you dig Sedaris, check out David Rakoff's Fraud
I am/was a bit of a Sedaris junkie, and I picked this up because it had a blurb from DS on it to the effect of "My favorite, and the funniest, writer in America". I figured with praise like that from Sedaris, it must be decent.

Their work is very similar, but I find Rakoff to be a much better writer across the board. A little smarter, a little more insightful, a little funnier, a little more cynical.

I constantly find myself re-reading his book, much more so than Sedaris's stuff.

Edited on Thu Apr-14-05 12:28 PM by imenja
His voice and style of delivery make it even better. I gave them for Christmas and birthday gifts last year.

Edit: you can also search through the audio files of "This American Life" and listen to the Sedaris segments there. That's a lot of fun.

David Sedaris Live at Carnegie Hall. Oh, it's even better to hear him read his own stories out loud. I almost peed my pants driving to work one day.

I love love love Sedaris. The kind that buys the book on release day and the stays up all night reading it.

You can't stop the Rooster!
