OOOOooo...New Mandrake Install here!

When I installed Mandrake Linux 9.1, way back when, I had to install it on another machine and move the drive to my NForce/AthlonXP 2000+ machine, since the kernel on the 9.1 install disks was not ready for NForce. Needless to say, problems ensued, albeit at a low level. CD burner never really worked, system was slow, in a low-grade manner, just minor but nagging frustrations.

Having had enough of that noise, last night I installed 9.2, using a network install floppy.

Oh my golly gee gosh, what a delightful difference!

While I did not get all the files I wanted to get, due to the fact that certain files are missing from the Mandrake mirrors, due to the fact that they have intentionaly broken them, so as to increase registration in their "Mandrake Club", until the end of the month(Something I do not have a problem with...), I do, now, have a wonderful Mandrake 9.2 system, with everything working and about 50-75% faster. I took the time to install the 2.4.22 Multimedia Kernel(preempt patches and other real=time optimizations and patches) and the Nvidia video and system drivers and everything is nicey-nice, in extremis. I am realy gassed with this.

N00Bs!!!: You could do a lot worse than giving this a try at the end of the month. It will be free and fully featured(3 CDs worth of free), it is damn easy to install(easier than ever, if you can believe that!) and it really really rocks.

Gotta love them froggy bastidges ar Mandrake. They just keep raising the bar.

1. I'm getting PowerPack 9.2 when it comes out

I'd rather get ProSuite which has a DVD and a reference manual along with 2 server config discs and comes with Java, but it costs $130 more! :wow: And they still call it an "attractive" price!

Hey, are the included win4lin and vmware demo versions or full versions? Their website posts screenshots but doesn't give any info saying if they're demos or not... (Discovery looks cool, but PowerPack comes with a LOT more software.)

SuSE 8.2 wasn't Nforce2 ready, but nvidia supports their chipset in Linux. (I :loveya: Nvidia...)

Did you buy Mandrake 9.2 from a local store or direct from Mandrake?

4. I network installed it.

Grabbed the network.img from a Mandrake mirror, dd'ed it to a floppy and it was yoiks and away. Surprisingly quickly, too.

3. I have the Mandrake 9.2 Powerpack installed,(bittorent)

I haven't installed the preempt kernel yet and I haven't looked at the third cd yet either.
