I went walking with friends on this small island yesterday. If you aren't familiar with this island, it is in the Potomac River right between Arlington, VA and Washington, DC. in other words, in the middle of the city, but it is totally wild and unspoiled and has no buildings except (thankfully) one set of restrooms and a memorial to Theodore Roosevelt. The trials wind through the unspoiled forest of this reclaimed land which was set aside as a sanctuary for flora and fuana. We noticed on the island that there was much damage from Hurricane Isabel. Huge trees appearing to be over 100 years old had pulled out of the ground by the roots. And the marsh trail, which has many little bridges over the marsh area of the island, was closed due to damage.
But what I really wanted to point out were the quotations from Teddy Roosevelt which were engraved into the very beautiful and impressive memorial to the first President to initiate our National Park Service.
