What grocery stores/chains were there when you were growing up.
We had First National, Stop n Shop, A&P, De Moula's, Market Basket, Barcelo's, and Kealy Farms in the Lawrence MA area. circa 1956-75.

Edited on Sat Apr-09-05 06:20 PM by SCRUBDASHRUB
Big Star used to have this thing where you could tune into horse races and win money. I recall winning maybe $5 when I was a kid.

8. Growing up a little further west in Mass. in the 70s
We had IGA (gone), Victory (sold to Hanafords), Market Basket is still around, as is Roche Brothers (I think).

Then there's Donelan's, a small local chain situated around the Littleton, Acton area that's still very much alive (and that I could tell you some incredible stories about).

38. LOL! Will do :)
I love that little shopping ctr in Lincoln. The store Something Special is one of my favorite places to go for cool gifts. I really miss my lunches there. I worked in Lexington for a long time and would drive to Lincoln for the serenity mid-day.

I'm sure there's not much serenity to be had in aisle seven though ;)

12. Safeway, A&P, Marketime, Lucky, Thriftway - when I was really little
Then QFC was founded and bought out the A&P stores here. I always like the Olson's stores out in North Seattle and Snohomish County. My grandparents lived in Edmonds, and that place had a great bakery.

21. Most of the Applebaum's became Rainbow stores.
Kowalski's may have bought a couple of them.

Kowalski's have had incredible makeovers in recent years. Actually so has Rainbow, being recently bought by Roundy's from Wisconsin.

25. Kohl's, Sentry, Roundy's, National Tea, Red Owl, A&P
Only Sentry remains, sorta. Jewel came up from Chicago, went back down, then came up again. Pick 'n Save started as a no-frills generic place where you priced your stuff with a black crayon and eventually morphed into a "real" store (in Mega, Ultra, and Gold's flavors.) Kohl's died, though it's spinoff department store now flourishes nationwide. A couple different flavors of upscale Sendik's are moving into old Kohl's territory, and Outpost Natural Foods has expanded a little.

- Milwaukee area here

27. Portland OR: Fred Meyer, Ceba, Thriftway, Albertsons, Keinows
as well as a lot of single stores like Ken's at 57th and Fremont, Frankie's way out on Killingsworth or something. I remember, before late-night stores (Portland had Plaid Pantry, not 7-11, and they closed at 2 AM), a friend of my mother's would have to drive out to Frankie's to get cigarettes as they were the only place open in the whole city late at night.

As for supermarkets, we had: A&P (which later changed to IGA), Winn Dixie, Ingles (based out of Asheville--they're still around), and Bi-Lo.

Mom-n-Pops stores were: Open Air Curb Market, Smoky Mountain Grocery, Smathers' Grocery, and another one my mom used to shop at and I can't remember the name but the woman who ran it was named Lucy--we called it Lucy's
