Why do we thatch?

I'm thatching the yard when I realized I don't even know why we thatch.Do we thatch because everyone else thatchs or is there a reason we thatch.I sure hope there's a reason because it's a lot like work.I even took the day off work just to thatch.I'm working way harder than if I had just gone to work!

4. You 'thatch' so the lawn roots in the soil, not in the thatch.

grass rooted in the thatch won't hold up as well come bad weather.
