One of our tenants hanged himself last night.

Shortly after I got to work this afternoon, one of our tenant's mother called and said she couldn't reach her son on the phone; she had left several messages on his voice mail, he hadn't returned her calls, and she was worried about him. She asked if I would go check on him, which I agreed to do. I knocked 3 separate times--- loudly--- and got no reply, so I let myself in. I found him hanging in his closet, a necktie for his noose; he was clearly dead.

I've spent all afternoon with the coroner, the detectives and crime scene, and I'm just.... exhausted. He was a good kid, just 20. It's so fucking sad and pointless...

I've never suffered from depression, but I know it can be a terrible, relentless disease; I liked Scott, and I saw him almost every day, so of course I'm beating myself up asking if there was something I missed, or something I might have done. I know, intellectually, the answer is 'no', but your heart doesn't always listen to your brain, ya know?

could have known. Part of depression is suffering alone and in silence.
My mom didn't really know the real deal until I was in my 30s. I didn't say anything until after I started getting help.

Don't beat yourself up. There is almost no way you could have known.

Suicide is always a diaster for the survivors. One of my two first cousins killed herself with a shotgun when she was 39. Her 11 year old son found her when he got home from school. Nearly 30 years later he's still screwed up...
