I had a Young's Double Chocolate Stout. Since I'm a big chocoholic, I loved it.

Does this mean I'm becoming some kind of obnoxious snobbish uppity beer drinker or does this mean my tastes have well...ummm developed?

After all, my usual buddies order the usual beers I can't stand (and I'm not gonna name names ;) but you know what I'm talkin about - crappy beers made by RW/GOP donating companies )....

1. does it taste like chocolate?
I'm not going to say which is the best, but I'll tell you what I tend to buy: Beck's, Fosters, and Boddington's Pub Ale. The Guiness in Ireland is amazing, but they sell different formulas for export because of issues of preservation, so they are not as good.

9. It did have a definite chocolate taste in there
Edited on Fri Apr-08-05 03:51 AM by fujiyama
I've got used to Stouts so I can't say if a regular person (lol, my friends think I'm nuts for liking stouts but dammit they're drinkin Miller Lite and Labbats) would find it bitter but I liked it a lot.

If I ever go to Ireland I'll make sure to get a Guinness. That's always my fallback drink. It's amazing that they've been brewing that stuff since the 1700s.

2. American beer is like 'making love' in a canoe....
...cuz it's "fucking close to water"!

Your not a SNOB until you care about the PRICE.
Until then, it's all about taste, and HANG the cost!

I personally like Guiness, fresh and warm....

The good ones come from micro-breweries.

15. One American bar I was in listed Budweiser, Miller etc.
as 'domestic' - and Sam Adams as 'imported'. Must be because it's actually a decent beer with a taste. I'd agree that, as a rule of thumb, the smaller the brewery in the USA, the better the beer.

4. Yes
Hey man, if you want a union made beer that's not pisswater, have a Pabst Blue Ribbon. Some will say I am wrong, but I dring those hoity toity brews as well. I don't know it's donation patterns, but I do know it's union made and they don't advertise it with half naked women getting on dudes.

My favorite beer is Pacifico, but that and Corona always make me crave nachos. Not a joke. Many times I've cracked one open to relax and I can't resist melting some cheese on tortilla chips with some olives and jalapenos. We keep it simple in the Abelman household.

Myself, I am not a fan of the stouts. I do enjoy a tasty wheat beer, preferably Bell's Oberon from Kalamazoo, MI as well as a variety of tasty microbrews. I love the Leinenkugel's Honey Weiss.

I used to drink lots of Coors until I realized to my horror their political agendas.

Also good are Canadian brews.

But if you really want good good good dark stout, there's a place in Anchorage, Alaska (road trip!) called Midnight Sun brewery and they have Mammoth Stout. I hate stout, but I love this stuff.

Edited on Fri Apr-08-05 04:01 AM by huellewig
I'm drinking The Beast right now.

And The Beast is not PBR:

it is:

It is just as nasty as it looks.

My edit was directed at others that lack the grace to critique the fine beverages produced in Southern Canada. Red state Googlers: Take fucking note. PBR is not The Beast. I never said it was. OH my: time to put the keyboard in the lock-box. This town is a bore.

PBR is about it for the major domestics and me. For some reason I just love the stuff.

To quote Jeff Rowland, "Milkwaukee's Best" and "ICE" are two things that should never be on the same label.

Edited on Fri Apr-08-05 03:48 AM by fujiyama
and I liked 'em quite a bit. I'm from MI and try to get local brews when I can. I've gotta give me state some credit for havin some good brews out there :) One I really liked was Stoney Creek Vanilla Porter. I'm a fan of stouts.

I've had the Pabst and it's a decent cheap beer. It's very watery, but I'll agree that I'd rather get something like that over Coors or whatever.

I've had the Stoney Creek, but I'm not sure.

I also from MI, and boy, there are a lot of good microbreweries and breweries in the state. Maybe something to do with the water? I don't know.

http://www.michiganbrewersguild.org/

That's a good site. I don't know how the other state's fare with their smaller breweries, but I know MI has some great ones.

40. sorry, Pabst is not union-made
the AFL-CIO has called a boycott. It used to be made in Milwaukee but Pabst, but is now made by subcontractors (including Miller) When Pabst bought Stroh's brewery in Seattle (Rainier Beer) it broke the union.

There may be some plants that are union, but it's all about the lowest bidder. (on the east coast, your Pabst will come from a brewery in Pennsylvania owned by Guinness, also non-union.

Nothing else compares. It fills your mouth with taste and texture, it slides down your throat like a long anticipated lover. Drinking Guinness isn't drinking beer - it's an experience in and of itself. Unique, perfect.

And it's a damn good beer as well.

I was with a friend who traveled with me. It seems at that time it was frowned upon for women to be alone in pubs because I saw a few signs that said "No Women Allowed," which made my blood boil. Anyway, we ordered Guinness on tap and the bartender brought us tiny little glasses of beer. I looked around and saw that all the men were drinking from big mugs. I told the bartender that I wanted a mug just like those men were drinking from. Well, he reluctantly brought us mugs.

31. Young's Double Chocolate Stout is my favorite too!
I had it for the first time at the restaurant in the Hotel Hershey at Hershey Park (PA) a couple of years ago and loved it ever since. (My wife bought me a case as my Christmas present). I guess chocolate beer fits in with the whole chocolate theme at Hershey.

Guinness is a good alternative (and easier to find) when chocolate stout is not available.

And can anyone tell me the deal with Bud/Bud Light? To me, they both taste pretty much like seltzer-- so are there really people for whom Bud is too heavy and they need to drink Bud Light instead?

36. Lots Of Stouts Have Chocolated Hops & Malts
Sam Adams stout does, so does Bell's. (Little brewery in Kalamazoo, MI that makes great beer.)

I think(!) that is also the difference between Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout and their Imperial Stout. But, that could be wrong.

It does impart a nice chocolate aftertaste and smooths the beer out quite a bit. I like them too!
