2. it really does suck
it took me almost an hour to get through to ask what was going on.
Finally got through & they said one of their biggest servers is down. I asked when it would be fixed and was told tomorrow morning.

3. Qwest DSL - been stable and fast for me morie than 90% of the time.
Edited on Thu Apr-07-05 09:51 PM by HypnoToad
It's been sluggish like once a month, but NEVER down. Not once.

I get 1.5m download (to me) and 900k+ upload (from me). Your comcrap connection was 3m download (assuming NOBODY else on your connection used the line at that time) and 256k upload    .

Also, cable connections are far more inviting to hackers because it's a SHARED LINE. All DSL connections are single; nobody shares them. Which is nice.

The price is about the same as cable, but for greater security and almost 5 times faster upload rate (GREAT for gaming and website development) it's damn well worth the sacrifice of an (inconsistent) 3m speed.

Also, Qwest lent me a firewall/gateway/router. Comcrap won't do that and if they see that the device connected to their line is a router device, they'll switch you off or do other means to disconnect you. (It was a big turnoff when they told me the price of having 5 computers on the system! :wow: All they do is sell unsecured bullploppie that they'll sooner-or-later monitor for router connections.)

Sadly, Comcast is the best ISP I've ever had
Which tells you a lot about the others (Earthlink, Qwest DSL, etc.)

The worst was Qwest. Ugh - that was down *all* the time.

But yeah, tonight is frustrating... :(

10. When did you use Qwest?
I've been on it for over a year now and it's been surprisingly stable.

I also live in the outer suburbs, not in a very urban area at all.

15. I had to switch last April when I moved into this house
The Qwest tech told me that "DSL wouldn't work in this house." :wtf:

I had lots of problems when I lived in downtown Seattle and was using it, for some reason (their reply was usually, "We're always working on the phone lines there.")

It was bizarre. :D

5. I did like 15 system restores, thinking it was just me.
Were you getting "page not founds" all the time? Because this is what I am getting. I am really grateful that it may not be my computer after all. I'm running a virus scan even. :hi:

11. Great Comcast Story!!!
So a few years ago I get my Comcast high speed cable modem. It's hooked up and running pretty well. One day it goes out. I call Comcast and tell them. Here is what they suggested:

Unplug the cable between the Cable modem and the wireless router. Plug it back in but with the cable end connected to the wireless rounter and the wireless end connected to the cable modem.

Why, I asked, would this make a difference. The nice lady said, "I don't know but it just seems to fix it."

Good God are they "challenged."

16. We have a running joke on the "unplug" thing
It's "standard" when you call.

There are never any "reported" problems in your area...
They are clueless as to why you are having a problem because everything seems to be just fine...
Unplug
Plug back in
Shall we send someone to your house?
Guy comes -- complete with paper booties...
Everything seems fine...everything's working

Yeah, everything except cable! :argh:

23. I hate it when they ask to send someone out.
I immediately think of "The Cable Guy." I'd gladly give up anything to keep HIM out of my house. When they say this, I say "Don't you have a Network Control Center?" Then they offer to send the guy out again. The last time around, I agreed and I turned out to be the "moran." One of the couplers for the cable was loose! I should have checked (or they might of asked). Networks used to be run by the brightest technical people in America starting with Telenet then NSFNet, UUNET, etc. Now they're tun by the cable TV guys and the frigging local telephone companies. ARGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG

14. I've been annoyed tonight but on the whole I love comcast
I'd say it works great 98.5% of the time for me. It's super speedy. My sister has DSL (Verizon) and I hate it. It is definately slower than what I am used to. Also DSL does that thing where there are different levels of speed and you pay more for each faster speed.

17. Not only is Comcast exceedingly stable in my area, but
they've increased the speed recently, and it now rivals T1 speed, according to more than one live online speed testing site.

I'm on the Garland, Texas feed, btw. It hasn't been down in months.

19. Not only that, but I stopped being a customer over a year ago . . .
And I still can't find out how to remove the "Microsoft Internet Explorer provided by Comcast High-Speed Internet" in the upper window border of my browser. Is it in the registry somewhere?

22. I had trouble earlier today in Cherokee county
and then later in the day in Fulton County. Oddly, although almost all the sites I go to wouldn't work, I was able to make a credit card payment.
