Just one document away from Irish citizenship!
:woohoo: Sort of, my aunt sent me a copy of my grand-mother's marriage license. Now all I need is my grand-mother's birth certificate from Ireland. Then I have to take all the documentation to the Irish embassy in D.C., obtain a Spanish translator, because my parents were married in Juarez, Mexico and their certificate is in Spanish. Pay the fee, I think it somewhere around $280 and I will by well on my way to Irish citizenship. Then I will be able to obtain an Irish/EU passport and I will be able to live and work in any EU member nation for up three months.

3. Actually, you'll have the right to live...
in any EU country for as long as you want...

I got my Irish passport about 10 years ago... Having two passports along with an American one gives me a great deal of comfort with the rabid right running the place

4. Sweet! I've been thinking about going to the Mid-east
Irish passport will be much better than an American one over there.

6. You can live there/here for ever
For better or for worse, you become a citizen of the European Union (alongside of Ireland).

It is an interesting fact that an English soliciter can practice law throughout Europe with the exception of Scotland, and so too a Scottish soliciter can practive law throughout Europe with the exception of England and Wales.

This all makes my own passport seem terribly easy. A work colleague is trying to get a British passport (having now lived here for the requisite number of years) and claims that it is the best passport in the world to hold (she is South African f.w.i.w.).

7. I looked into it once, but the rules say that I can't pass it on to my kid
I qualify for Irish citizenship down one line of my family (grandmother born in Ireland), but apparently even if I become one, my kids can't and couldn't move there with me. Without my kids, it wasn't an option.

14. That's not necessarily true
I think it sepends on far removed from the homecountry you are. My best friend just got dual Irish citizenship for him and his son (he's still working on his wife). The interesting thing is that his wife is Japanese. Their kid -- now of dual Irish/American citizenship -- is the only red-headed asian kid I've ever seen. His granparents immigrated here though in the 30s, so he's only the second generation born here.

Also, they may have relaxed the rules again -- Irish citizenship os a big moneymaker for the Irish government, both in terms of direct cash revenue and as an inducement for tourism.

8. what year was your grandmother born in?
Do you have to write to get her birth certificate?

I wonder how it works if you have 2 passports - an American one and an Irish one? Do you leave using the USA one and land in say Ireland and use the Irish one?

Curious indeed!

I hope you get everything you need soon. :D

13. Bye. Thanks for giving * an extra vote.
:hi:

Leaving the country is just as puerile and spineless as voting green or NOT voting at all.

OTOH, does it matter? The elections are rigged, and everything else... Leave if you can. It might be selfish but it's also about survival; and that's the point when selfishness gets priority over civilization. The neocons proved that. Have done so for years.

Best wishes to you.

But don't ask me to contribute $280 unless you want me to come along.
