Teacher Made 5 Year Old Unclogg School Toilet While Class Watched
<snip>

BONITA SPRINGS, Fla. -- After a little girl got sick in the bathroom of her kindergarten class, the teacher made her don rubber gloves and manually remove a clog from the toilet, according to a lawsuit filed by the girl's mother.

Lori Januska sued Bonita Springs Charter School this week after she said her 5-year-old daughter, Heather, clogged the toilet Sept. 22 and her teacher made her remove it as the entire class watched.

The suit said "a vulnerable 5-year-old was subjected to cruel, unusual and traumatic disciplinary actions which directly resulted in severe emotional distress, pain and suffering and mental distress." The girl suffers from an incurable gastrointestinal condition.

The suit, which seeks an unspecified amount in damages, claims the school staff was negligent in hiring an unqualified teacher.

School principal Pamela Franco and school district attorney Keith Martin declined comment on the suit.

Mark Levinsen, senior vice president of administration and human resources for Charter Schools USA, investigated the original complaint and said the teacher was disciplined.

5. And they didn't call the custodian because . . . ?
So she clogged it due to a physical problem ("The girl suffers from an incurable gastrointestinal condition"), and the teacher decided to publically humiliate her. Lovely.

7. Florida, again. They must hate children.
Kids there get tastered, lost, molested and murdered. Florida is not the sunshine state, it's the Neglected Child State

8. At the risk of sounding biblical...
...I think that it would be fitting punishment also to let the girl's mother bitch-slap the teacher in front of the class, as part of the teacher's sensitivity training. How can we come to understand that it's not all right to humiliate others, if we don't feel some humiliation ourselves?

16. Well... turnabout is fair play, as they say.
Always sad to see how some people treat children left in their care.

10. Call me overprotective...
but if anyone did this to my son, I'd kick her fucking ass. I would plant my size nine boot so far up her ass that she'd have to have it surgically removed. And then I'd make her grovel for forgiveness from my child.

And I'd gladly pay whatever civil fine I had to after she pressed charges against me.

No one messes with the Beans kid.

11. just another day spent in the caring embrace...
... of America's public schools. :eyes:

The article says that the teacher has been "disciplined". If by "disciplined" they mean something less than fired, then I'll be disgusted -- but not at all surprised.

12. Not public. Charter.
In most states, Charter schools do not have the same standards that public schools have - they can refuse to take kids, use uncertified individuals as teachers, etc.

15. charter schools are public, though separate
And in any case, private schools are frequently even more horrid than public ones.

The thing I don't understand is the reverence that some of us seem to have for the public schools. To me, they seem to be rather abusive institutions, at least in their current form.

20. Don't know about where you are, but charters here are basically
publicly funded private schools. There's minimal accountability, minimal oversight. They can reject any kid for any reason, meaning they have fewer of the "problem" kids who could use the specialized attention that charters are supposed to give.

The problem with the public schools are that teachers aren't allowed to teach, administrators aren't allowed to administer, and everyone has to toe some line created by politicians, not educators. If the educators were in charge, the schools would be better.

I don't want a bug man from Texas in charge of how my child learns to read, but that's the way it works.

And it's not so much reverence for the public schools as the knowledge that they must be improved and preserved if we have any hope of having an effective citizenry in 20 years. The kids in the horrible schools the politicians have created are the ones who are going to be installing my electricity, reading my MRIs, dispensing my meds and ensuring my food safety in 20 years, and I'm scared as hell that they're not getting the education they need to do the job.

that I had just made the same assumption. When I read that this happened to a little girl I immediately jumped to the conclusion that the teacher was a women without really even being aware of it.

Interesting.

If someone did this to my kid, I would personally make sure his/her ass was fired and that they would never get a job in the state again.
