Anyone have a spouse go away for college or for some other reason?
My fiancee is considering going to graduate school at one of the top art schools in the country. Unfortunately, where we live, there really isn't a very good art school for her.

So I was wondering if any other DUers have experience with a significant other living long distance for a couple of years. Anyone have any words of wisdom for me?

1. Not a couple of years, but 8 months.
I was offered a job out of state, 1200 miles from home, that I couldn't pass up.

So until the school year was up, and the house could be sold, we lived apart for 8 months.

I flew home about once a month. We survived, but we weren't exactly newlyweds at the time. I'd do it again.

2. Thanks for your words.
It's hard for me to come to grips with. On one hand, we're getting ready to start a family, while on the other, she may be getting ready to be gone for 2 years.

3. 4 years different states
You can do it, it's tough but get a good LD plan and save those frequent flyer miles!

After many separations during military, due to jobs in different states, we did it for 4 years!

Now he's gone on the job alot and commutes to New York for work, we hope to change that soon.

Blessings and good luck!

5. My partner spent 3 summers in grad school three hours away, but...
he came home every other weekend. Believe me, those weekends REALLY live in my memory. Absence DOES make the heart grow fonder.

Going farther away would obviously be much harder but you guys can make it. Good luck!
