During the run-up to the Iraq War, I stopped visiting it for a wile, bacuse there's a LOT of arch-conservatives there and they were all posting about politics.

I'm addicted. I could spend entire days there, and actually have in the past.

We were both into jets when we were little, when I visited him about a year ago I saw that it didn't wear off, he had a little model of a Boeing 737 on his desk. The Straight Dope. In spite of the name, it's not a drug site. The articles linked from the front page are always good, but the message boards are the best part. There is a very eclectic group of people discussing a very wide variety of topics. Critical thinking and intelligent debate are emphasized and newbies are often put in their place (usually nicely) if they can't follow the spoken and unspoken rules. The most important rule being "don't be a jerk". Bannings can occur, but not simply because of unpopular political beliefs. There're lots of good political discussions and, while there are some resident wingnuts, it tends to be center to left of center. The wingnuts keep things interesting and give some comic relief. I think most of us would be more than welcome there. In fact, I'd guess that there's already a good overlap in memberships. I was a regular there for years before I discovered DU. I discovered DU after Nov. 2 and now I split my time between there and here. I highly recommend it!
