She led a campaign in Miami in the '70s against gay rights under the banner Save Our Children. The gay community countered with We Are Your Children and ultimately humiliated her into hiding. She became a gospel singer. This was pre-Falwell and Robertson, but an important part of gay history in the US.

EDIT: I forgot to add the OJ connection: at the same time she was on national TV as the well-scrubbed spokeswoman for the Florida Orange Juice Growers or some such group, singing a jingle promoting the juice. So she was in the national spotlight for commercial reasons and her fame conveniently spilled over into the family-values area.

back in the time when Roger & Me was first released. Now another generation has come of age and Anita may have sunk into oblivion. But the story of her Save Our Children campaign and the gay reaction to it is a significant part of American history, IMHO, and deserves at least a little remembering.
