Breaker 1-9 for a radio check
Whatever happened to CB radios? I used to have fun listening to the truckers on the road.

2. I read you four by four
I think CBs died with the advent of cell phones.

3. Funny trivia regarding CB "lingo"
Back in the heyday of CB radio (early seventies), there were Top-40 songs, movies and even at least one TV series ("Movin' On" with Claude Akins and Frank Converse) highlighting the culture. Back in those days, everything was "That's a big ten four, good buddy!"

Well, about ten years later I was reading an article in The New Yorker that mentioned that the term "good buddy" was now anathema, and likely to get you a punch in the face at a truck stop. Why? Because it had become a pejorative euphemism for being gay!

5. CB (the old 11-meter ham band) is now a cesspool of profanity and racism.
However, I do have CB channel 19 (27.185 mHz) pre-set in my Icom 706 mobile ham HF/VHF station. I cannot transmit on CB, but channel 19 is good for traffic information. The other channels are disgusting.

8. They are still there. I talked to four or 5 people today on
my CB. I love talking to truckers about politics and how great the Bush Economic plan is working, along with discussions about how nice it is to have an oil president in office and the low price of fuel..
