Poll question: Do any of your relatives still use terms like "colored"?
Do any of your relatives still use terms like "colored"?

Not as an insult, but just as a matter of course, because they're still stuck in 1950?

My grandma was like that.

2. adventures in Appalachia
I grew up in SE Ohio. A kid once said of one of the only black students in my school, "He ain't so bad for a n****r." The speaker was convinced that he was offering a complement of the highest degree.

5. Sort of.
My family's Jewish, and a lot of my relatives are in their '80s, and they tend to still refer to African-Americans as "schwartzers." It's not necessarily a pejorative, though, as "schwartz" is simply the German/Yiddish word for black. It's still weird though, to be asked questions like "So honey, are you still playing in your band with the schwartzer singer?"

6. My mom...
I'm just glad that I got her to stop using the N word. And she loves to use it. She still uses the N word whenever she can.

7. I Used Have In-Laws Who Used "Mulignane"
They were Italian Catholics in Brooklyn, NY.

"Mulignane" means "eggplant" in Italian and is used to refer to black folks. It was new to me and in context it didn't seem to be used as an insult. But I suspect there are those who would take offense.

will use the phrase "people of color" to emcompass all who are not shades of lily white. I do not use the phrase as a pajorative, but to point out laws and behaviors directed toward different ethnicities.

Up until even the Twenthieth Century, there were laws in this country that prevented various ethnic groups from gaining United States citizenship no matter how long they lived here. Those ethnic groups were not always people of color, but those of color (the so-called yellow, brown, red, and black) were less likely to have the prohibition lifted than those who were white.

Thus far, no student has ever called me on the use of the phrase and kids today are not afraid to accuse one of racism at the drop of a hat...

10. I love the expression "people of color". I think it sounds beautiful.
(although technically, I think white people ARE also people of color, but whatever...)

I call her on it everytime. Now when she says something along those lines, she corrects herself. But it still comes out.

19. Some my extended family members have, in the past, used the "N" word.
At a family event about 10 years ago it was used and I loudly said that using that word was soooo "white trash" but if they felt comfortable using it, then so be it.

I haven't heard it used in my presence since. LOL!
