I went into a convienence store today and a customer had a puppy...
Some kind of sheperd mix-tiny, and way too young to be away from mama.
Anyway, I had to go pet it and it reached out for my index finger and started sucking on it! Puppy breath!
Awwwwwww.
I hope the woman will take good care of it.

1. How sad! Less than 8 weeks is illegal in most states!
If she was dim enough to take a puppy that young, I can only hope that she is using her limited IQ points to take care of it.

We just got one of DUer Prozacnation's 8 week old puppies yesterday - and it seems sooo young and needy. But terribly sweet!

3. No kidding...she seemed smitten with it though.
I didn't ask questions but maybe something happened to the mom.
This little guy couldn't of been over 3-4 weeks old.
She was amazed that he would take my finger. She said she was going home to bottle feed it.

8. If she's bottle feeding it. then perhaps something happened to the mother.
No one would purposefully take a pup away at such a young age, and then be saddled with bottlefeeding. My bet is that she's a dear soul who rescued an abandoned pup.

9. My puppy was dropped at the pound with 3 littermates
at 4 weeks old. The staff tried to get him to take them back to the mother, but he refused, and they are REQUIRED to take in ALL animals. He had given the other 3 in the litter away to friends - at 4 WEEKS OLD. The 4 at the pound had to be treated for a severe case of roundworms. The other 3, unless they were treated quickly, are goners.

The guy has a pure boxer and a pure black lab. He is 20. He was gonna breed them to make $$$ - but forgot that they could breed w/ each other.

11. Yup. We tried to find his address - he did not leave one.
His Lab will have another litter w/in 4 months... he'll make a few $$ off the ones that survive. I cannot imagine that any but the most idiotic would allow their female boxer to breed with his for a stud fee.... I hope not anyway.

5. If mom dies, there's not much choice.
As a teenager, I nursed a litter of three teacup poodle pups whose mother died when they were three weeks old (non-pregnancy related). I carried those three around with me the entire summer, because they could not be left alone, even for an hour or two to run to the store or whatever.

I would have been terribly offended if someone like you called me "dim" and of "limited IQ" for taking care of those babies.

13. Read post #9. The odds of this being a guardian of an orphaned puppy
is small. I would have asked. It's illegal here in CA. A young puppy should also not be exposed to too many ppl or germs. Hand-washing and all that.

I have bottle-fed a number of 'drop-off' kittens from the Pound. It's a hard job, but sooo rewarding....never tried a puppy.

6. actually ...
fwiw, i've also read that many now consider 7 weeks to be the ideal time ... sounds like 7 to 8 weeks is the best time ...

7. That's not a fair assumption.

Perhaps the pop's mom died. Instead of insulting her for having a limited IQ, perhaps we should thank her for rescuing a put that might have been headed for euthanasia.

12. The dog we had when I was a kid was given away at 5 weeks
The mother dog had something wrong with her (I don't remember what--I was only ten.)

The puppy used to snuggle up to people and suck their shirt buttons.
