Mac Mini came today. What a magnificent machine.

I cannot believe the size. It's about 6 1/2 in wide and 2 inches tall. (And I thought the Cube was cool).

Tell you how it performs after a week. One day doesn't count.

25. 256 is fine in the order
I'm a student (and a computer scientist) -- when I bought my Powerbook, I couldn't justify spending the money for extra memory, so I got the base 256 megs.

The computer's treated me and my wife pretty well for the past year, but with our tax return, I bought 512 more megs for it (got and installed it today!). Buying from Crucial was cheaper than getting it installed when I bought the Mac anyway! Only $100 for that 512.

Crucial, by the way, is Micron. Micron is based in Idaho. Since I'm an Idahohoan, I buy my memory from Crucial, even if it's cheaper elsewhere. Plus, they make quality memory.

23. LOL . . . find me a complete PC that doesn't have video and ethernet
The only time you have to buy either is if you build the machine yourself, and in 90% of the cases, the ethernet is built into the motherboard.

Be honest here :).

that the advent of an ethernet card and video card were new at one time. Mac ALWAYS had them built in. Oh, that's right....Macs are SO expensive.

27. I've been an IT professional for over 15 years, and I can state as
absolute fact that Macs did NOT always have them built in because when Macs first appeared, ETHERNET DID NOT EXIST.

31. Of course Macs did not ALWAYS have these built-in, BUT
when ethernet cards appeared on the scene, Macs were the first to have these built-in. I know bec I knew those w/ PCs users who talked about getting an ethernet card or video card, and I was "say what?" Arent they built in? They were not and I stand by that. PC people had to decide where they would get an ethernet or video card and whether is was COMPATIBLE.

Show me evidence where PCs were FIRST to have them built-in? I don't think you can.

34. So now you've reversed yourself from "always had them".
Also, PC's ALWAYS had video cards when you bought them. However, cards that displayed graphics came later. The same is true of any Apple product of the time.

The reason that PC's did not come with ethernet cards when ethernet first came out was because there were several different network topologies in use, and PC manufacturers did not want tolock a machine into a single type of network. Once networks utilizing token ring w/coaxial cable and the like had been phased out and there was what amounted to a single standard, PC's began shipping with ethernet cards built in.

Of course, if were in a token ring environment using a Mac and needed a coaxial cable connection to fit into the topology, you would play hell connecting a Mac to the network.

10. I'm not a Mac person, but I have recommended these to several
people who asked me what they should buy. I think they're pretty darn neat :). ESPECIALLY for a typical home user who doesn't need a heavy gaming machine, etc. I think they'd be an ideal home theater PC, etc.

20. The people I recommend the mini Mac to are the folks that want a
machine for internet, simple word processing and home entertainment style stuff.

I usually recommend a PC for pretty much everything else because most folks I encounter that don't fit the description above want it for everything from gaming to image editing, and only the PC can really handle it all.

If all someone was doing was video editing and the like, I might point them to a Mac, but the situation has never presented itself :).

38. Then a Mac makes perfect sense :)
For someone that has no intentions of playing games, it's a great way to go.

Like I said, I recommend PC's for people that want a do it all machine (that includes playing all the latest games).

I recommend mini Macs and the like for typical home users that want an internet/home theater PC.

If I ever had a request for a machine strictly for graphics or video editing, I'd most likely recommend a Mac, but none of my clients have ever wanted a machine for that purpose.

39. As I have stated in other threads, I am a PC user considering a Mac.
I do take issue with smug, condesending posts. I realize you have a vast amount of knowledge and experience that a lowly, ignorant person such as myself could never hope to attain. Perhaps if I do decide on a Mac I will be happy with it only because I know no better?

41. You're once again making arguments out of thin air.
I say I recommend Macs to people under certain circumstances.

You take offense to this.

And somehow I become the bad guy?

How exactly is "I recomment the mini-Mac for people that need a computer for XXXXX, but if they want to do Y, I would recommend something else" condecending?

It's no different than saying "I recommend a semi-trailer for people that need to haul 60 pallets of canned goods, but if all they need to do is transport themselves and their children to and from school and work, I recommend something different."

Your self-righteous indignation at someone who actually recommends Macs under certain conditions is duly noted.

Same price and it has the USB/SD Memory ports (plus one other for cameral memory cards) and IEEE (fiber optic) port up front under a panel. I think the Mac design is nice but you are going to want a few ports on the front for convenience.

It is very fast and, after about a year, trouble-free!
