Cats alert man to fire in his house

SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER STAFF

A man credited his cats yesterday with saving his life, waking him when his home caught fire. Seattle fire spokeswoman Helen Fitzpatrick said the home did not have working smoke detectors when the fire broke out, just before 4:30 a.m. Firefighters arrived at the two-story home in the 2100 block of East John Street to find flames and smoke pouring out. The homeowner, alerted by his cats, had escaped, Fitzpatrick said. A roast left in the oven overnight caught fire and spread to other combustible materials and into the walls, investigators determined.

A bit more at the link, including a reminder to change batteries in smoke detectors. Hummm how does one change a battery in a cat?

A parrot in our community alerted his owners to a fire in the house and saved their lives.

1. The cats I have had in the past would have been the ones who set the fire.

7. Just think what they're planning while you're asleep.

Just about a half mile.

On edit - how does one leave a roast in the oven all night?

5. I had to think about that --
put the roast in the oven . . . and then forgot about it?

One would have thought that they could smell it -- I mean it would smell burned before it turned to flames.

4. And, may I ask, what happened to the cat?
Was that mentioned? The cat saved his life. I hope it escaped.

6. Cats -- more than one -- and yes I was wondering the same thing.
The article was too darn short for cat lovers.

10. I once had a fire in my apartment and I ran back in for my cat!
The smoke was so thick that I couldn't see anything, but I found my cat.
I got her out safe, but I got real sick from all the smoke.

12. BS! The cats probably woke him up accidentally after setting the fire
Cats are both smarter and more devious than us. They're not benignly waiting for you to scratch their backs, or feed them, or use a new brand of litter. As someone who has owned many cats (before I saw the light), I speak with some authority. Look in your cat's eyes, people, look in her eyes. She's plotting something, something wicked and terrible.

RISE UP AND FREE YOURSELF FROM THE SHACKLES YOUR FELINE OPPRESSORS HAVE ENSLAVED YOU WITH!
