If you could recommend ONE band..................
that you like, that virtually nobody else has heard of, who would they be? Please provide a link so we can all check it out. Me I am obsessed with a band named Bocca, a little known band out of England.

2. The Juvenators
Edited on Sat Apr-02-05 12:06 AM by Jilly Beans
If you saw the Black Starz channel's feature documentary titled "Mississippi's Last Juke Joint," then you saw the Juvenators.

http://www.3kids.com/juvenators/

Listen here:
http://www.3kids.com/ram/juvenators/std.ram
http://www.3kids.com/ram/juvenators/wdw.ram
http://www.3kids.com/ram/juvenators/lmtih.ram
http://www.3kids.com/ram/juvenators/53b.ram

From the website:

The Juvenators, a four-piece blues band based in south Mississippi, whose motto is "the blues, the whole blues, and nothing but the blues". That's a slogan that rings true, as evidenced by their undiluted straight-ahead blues. With influences such as Freddy King, T-Bone Walker, Duane Allman and Steve Blailock, the Juvenators have a growing body of pure-form original material.

Virgil Brawley (on guitar and lead vocals) and Byrd Lovell (slide guitar virtuoso and vocalist) began playing in the '60s, drawing on the blues they grew up with. Guy Wade is the real ace in the hole on his three-piece drum set. Bassist George Vance of Jackson rounds out the group after having played with such artists as Sam Myers and the late Dwight Ross.

4. Vic Thrill
Edited on Sat Apr-02-05 12:14 AM by SheepyMcSheepster
Vic Thrill from new york, heard about them via "This American Life" on NPR, the singer/guitarist was a part of one of the stories.

Vic Thrill is like the talking head meets beck in the outer space future.

I have been hooked since. this is really the most refreshing and fun music i have heard in ages.

here is the website: http://www.victhrill.com/

you can listen to music if you go to the "audio" section.
you can also listen to a few newer songs here: http://www.myspace.com/victhrill

i would suggest checking out "tell your children not to look at the president" on the myspace site. "hummingbird pneumonia" is definetely the song to start with.

i highly recommend this ablum: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/customer-reviews/B00007L6HO/ref=cm_cr_dp_2_1/102-1823969-3507361?%5Fencoding=UTF8&s=music

19. The Disco Biscuits
http://www.discobiscuits.net

and you can download a ton of shows for free here:

http://www.archive.org/audio/etreelisting-browse.php?cat=Disco%20Biscuits

They also sell soundboards of complete shows for $7.99 (eight bucks for a pristine sounding soundboard is WELL worth it to me)

www.disclogic.com lots of great artists on that site.

Anyways the biscuits are a mix between jam bands like the Grateful Dead and Phish and techno. You'll love it or hate it, but to me its pure musical crack. Here are some of the better shows to download:

http://www.archive.org/audio/etree-details-db.php?id=9918
the Vassillios > Little Lai > Mr. Don > Run Like Hell > Little Lai is just BUTTER

http://www.archive.org/audio/etree-details-db.php?id=10200

The whole show start to finish is outstanding. The astronaut is just naaasty. But the show really gets hot with the The Very Moon > Helicopters > The Very Moon > Shem-Rah Boo > Helicopters, Kitchen Mitts, Run Like Hell.

http://www.archive.org/audio/etree-details-db.php?id=10474

From the end of set one, through all of the second set was one of the most satisfying musical experience ever. I was BLISSCODAWG then :)

The first time I heard them I thought they kind of sucked, but they grew on me with subsequent listens and before I knew it I was pretty obsessed. I'll have to check out The Mars Volta too, since you're not the first Coheed & Cambria fan to recommend them.

29. The Go-Betweens
They, in all their incarnations, have been around since the late 70s. They have some very very good songs. Some very great music. And almost no one has ever heard of them; though whenever I mention them here on DU, invariably on a thread like this one, somebody comes forward and agrees with me.

I think they're pretty obscure, but maybe that's just because of where I live and the people I hang out with...

but someone on DU always agrees with me about them being a great band.

Edited on Sat Apr-02-05 01:30 AM by jpgray
If you like good summery bubblegum pop, try the Millennium's debut, "Begin." Awesome album of poppiness and hooks with airy harmonies and neat melodies. The band is one of Curt Boettcher's big pop projects, and "To Claudia on Thrusday," "I Just Want to Be Your Friend" and "It's You" in particular are great in production and songwriting.

If you like jangle-pop from the sixties, for something REAL obscure, try the Dovers' entire four single catalogue--it's finally been rereleased on vinyl as the EP "We're Not Just Anybody," and it's probably around on the file sharing servers somewhere. Great writing and playing, particularly on "She's Not Just Anybody" and "I Could Be Happy." The singing is just perfect.

For something more modern and a little more well-known and critically loved, go for "Deceit" by This Heat. Great experimental album--you'll be amazed how much sound they could get out of tape/electronic effects, a keyboard, drums, a bass and guitar. Presages a lot of the murky indie pap out there today by 20 years or so, and is a lot better.
