Mod: Oh for God's sake, quit locking Red Sox Threads
You silly goose.

You're directing Red Sox fans to a thread Headed "Yankeees Win!!!!!!"

Don't care or know anything about sports, I guess?

And so the eff WHAT if there's "post-game chaos"? It'll be over, the chaos I mean, in a couple of hours.

1. both types of fans watched the game
it's the post game thread... I've locked all the dupes of either team (and a marlins dupe too).

9. Sorry for the dupe
I got a page with text and "invalid query," which I haven't seen since the switchover.

Locking all the "dupes" was wrong because they weren't dupes. Locking some of the threads would've been fine. But if you don't know the difference between a team you caring about LOSING a game of this magnitude and a team you care about WINNING such a game, then you should consult an expert.

5. Are you serious?
Why would you do such thing?

I made a valid point about board process. What's your beef?

3. because at one point...
I counted 20... TWENTY... baseball threads on the first page of the lounge. These threads also show up on the LATEST page.

It's just common sense and common courtesy.

4. No it isn't
Common sense isn't an issue at a moment like that.

I mean seriously. 20 threads is all you got? I'd have expected 50 or more.

It's a silly thing to waste your time on, locking thread after thread and re-directing people to threads that DON'T EXPRESS PEOPLE'S FEELINGS. I'm disappointed. I'm a Red Sox fan. No way I want my post redirected to some thrilled and ecstatic Yankee fan's thread.

The game ended after midnight Eastern, by morning the posts would trickle down and by afternoon they'd be way down the pages. Just let it go.

6. Yes, actually. It is.
There are literally thousands of fora on the internet, many of them unmoderated, where you may share your disappointment and vow revenge.

This is a moderated forum, most of us do not come here to discuss sports. Allowing some of the threads to remain is courteous to the sports fans amoung us.

The moderators are performing their responsibilities as charged and I, for one am grateful.

7. Thank you SOteric
BigMcLarge has done an outstanding job here with all the baseball madness these last few days, and he's done it with grace and humor.

If somebody wants 50 disparate threads on the same topic, that's what Usenet is for.

8. Huh?
This is the "anything goes" DU Forums. This where we're SUPPOSED to talk about sports and other items unrelated to the core mission of the board.

12. Look. I clicked on numerous posts
And every one directed me to the Yankees fans thread. That's when I posted this thread.

There were NOT enough unlocked threads to go around.

16. Thanks for NOTHING
Geeze.

Here's what happened. The game ended. I watched a little post-game stuff, then logged on. I started clicking on Game threads on the first page. Every one, even ones obviously started by disappointed Red Sox fans, led me to one thread full of ecstatic Yankees fans.

So I started THIS thread because I thought directing all posters to one thread was a STUPID idea (one thread for the losing side, one for the winning side, at least, seems reasonable) and it's a SILLY WASTE OF TIME because by dawn the threads will be down the page anyway.

Now I'm tired and I'm not tingling anymore at that game and I'm going to sleep.

11. This is a moderated set of message boards
whose intended purpose is the discussion of Democratic, liberal and progressive politics. The DU Lounge is a place within that forum set aside for vanity posts, socialising, social posts and yes, sports.

Sports are still not the over-riding theme of these boards (these fora) and they are not the reason the people come to post at DU.

There are thousands of fora on the internet where one can post specifically about sports, or on any topic without the intercession of a moderator.

There are sports posts allowed in the Lounge. But out of courtesy to those of us who come here for reasons other than sports (such as the intended purpose of these fora) I am grateful that I need not cease posting entirely for the evening or participate in a board clogged full of baseball threads, all basically variants of one another.

This is a community of individuals with different goals than the one you state. No one is depriving you of the right to speak here, or of the right to take your sports angst to another spot on the internet and indulge yourself to your heart's content.

14. What, you're saying
Some hippie-chick's pictures of her kittens don't fit the intended purpose?

The DU Lounge is FOR posts that do NOT relate to the intended purpose. That's what it says in the heading to this particular forum.

What "courtesy"? If you want posts on the "intended purpose," why not go to the fora devoted to the intended purpose and let the Yankees fans whoop and Red Sox fans wail? In the meantime, nobody starting a thread on the game tonight was doing anything except venting deeply felt disappointment or excitement. How about YOU show some courtesy and just ignore it all til it dies down in a couple of hours?

15. wait...
so YOU get to create threads and then another thread complaining about the thread being locked, and if we respond, WE'RE supposed to ignore it?

Nobody's stopping you from saying anything at all. You could've said what you had to say in the existing baseball threads.

And btw, this thread technically should've been locked right away and referred you to the Ask the Administrators forum. BigMcLarge is a nicer guy than I.

17. No. It's too late.
I'm saying the mods should've just let the chaos reign for a couple of hours, or, at least, let a few more threads stay open. My point about ignoring threads has nothing to do with THIS thread.

I don't see why it's so hard for you to ignore baseball threads. I ignore the hippie-chick's-kitten-pictures threads quite easily. I just don't click on them.

As for the "existing baseball threads," did you READ my complaint? They directed all game posts to ONE thread, started by a Yankee fan and mostly consisting of happy Yankee fans?

Now, as I just said, I'm tired and not tingling anymore and I'm going to bed.

This issue will only come up once every 25 or 35 years because that's how often games that intense and that important between two teams with huge national followings come along.

18. well...
as a moderator, I can assure you we've never been trained to let "chaos reign for a couple of hours".

I know (although I'll never understand why) that baseball games get people emotional. So do elections, primaries and presidential speeches, but we mods have to do our jobs regardless.

Get a good rest! peace.

20. oh...
I've read dozens of essays on the beauty of various sports. I just don't get it. That's fair... I know a lot of people who don't.

I used to have a roommate that would literally have his whole worldview destroyed with the 49'ers lost. I never understood it. I've never been a sports fan.

But if it means anything, i was rooting for the Red Sox tonight, too. I was bummed they lost.

21. Were the baseball threads being locked due to space constraints?
This was a very big deal to those of us in the Northeast. Even non-baseball types were tuning in to this game. So maybe cutting out the threads was a little heavy-handed, since this is the lounge after all, and no matter what people want to discuss, it should be ok. DEMOCRATIC? Does that word sound familiar? If so, then be a nice guy and let those people talk, hunny!!

We can choose whether or not to look at the threads, anyway, it should all pretty much die down and traffic on that subject will wane over the next few days more than likely.

By the way, I love this discussion board, and the less restrictions, the better. We should be open to discussions of all types and open to all points of view. We're not Freepers after all!

XXXOOO

22. I couldn't agree more, Boilerbabe...
nobody was trying to shut down discussion. The lounge mods, as per the rules and directions given by the Admins, were simply trying to keep the discussions contained to as few threads as possible.

I appreciate that it's a big deal to a lot of people. Really, I do.

Seriously, if you anybody is concerned about the way this was handled, please post in Ask the Administrators. They really have the authority to explain or apologize, if necessary. I shouldn't have gotten this involved in the discussion. I was just defending BigMcLarge's honor. He's a great moderator.
