I have decided not to cut my hair for a long time
I want to have long hair again. I have kept it short since entering the military at the age of 17.

Do 39 year old guys look silly with long hair?

1. 39? Yes. 40? No.
I seem to remember that you are anxious about turning 40 - just wanted to assuage your fears! You'll look great no matter how active your hair follicles are! :hi:

2. The Prince Valient look sort of depends on the shape of your face...
Edited on Thu Mar-31-05 04:16 PM by HereSince1628
But if you wear it in pony tail you can probably get by no matter how your face is shaped!

Of course I'm assuming you are not writing about the hair on your legs.

3. Not if it's still thick.
Ever see those bald guys though with long hair in the back? Not a good look.

7. Once I see a bald spot, it's ALL gone
Receding a bit doesn't bother me.

8. Bald is so nice...
Just thought I'd mention that. :)

Long looks great too, though... and no... age has no bearing on whether it does or not.

9. It shouldn't.
We all get older, but if you're almost 40 and it hasn't happened yet, you should be pretty much ok in that department anyway.

6. I haven't cut my hair since I was 18, and I don't plan on doing it
anytime soon...and I don't think I look silly, but then again I also look a lot younger than I really am, so maybe my case is different...

11. I'm 40 and grew mine
I haven't had it like this in a while. The "bangs" are past my mouth. Mostly it's because of laziness. I know it looks like shit, but the good thing about turning 40 is..I don't give a shit what people think it looks like. :)

13. Funny, I'm going to be 36 in a couple of weeks and I've done
the same thing (and under the same circumstances of it being short since I went into the military at 17). It's a small world :).

for it to take so many years to get over.

16. LOL . . . Not so much that as when you get out
you have to find jobs that require you to look civilized, so it becomes a habit :)

Now that I have a fairly solid/steady job, I don't need to look clean cut :)

I'm a fairly hot babe, over 40, and I love men with long hair. That shaved thingie just doesn't do it for me. Let it grow!

17. it's a very dated look
The 60s are over, even the 80s are over. Ponytail or desperate cry for attention, only your hairdresser knows for sure.

20. Please.
Anybody who saw Johnny Depp in "Chocolat" with a ponytail looking hotter than Georgia asphalt KNOWS that's not true.

Different bites for different likes.

19. You'd look adorable with it.
Babes would be clamoring for your attention.

However, you might lose some of that Bowie "je ne sais quoi" thing you got goin on. But I say go for it.

I'll bring my ruler to the next meetup to see how far it's grown out!

What makes you think they aren't doing so now?

The Bowie thing is funny. I got it again recently in real life. And a new one while waiting for a friend at The Barley House; Hugh Grant.

I'm destined to look like someone else. I think that why people stare at me.

BTW, when IS the next meetup?

23. Now now dear, don't get your little macho feathers all ruffled.....
:D

Make that MORE babes would be clamoring...or something.

No news on meetup status right now.

I just had major emergency surgery, so still need to get back to my chipper old self. And I'll be going on vacation in early June for 2 weeks.

Other than that, we're open to suggestions.

I won't have a free weekend for almost a month.

Maybe May.

I hope you feel better soon.

And no machismo. Just sarcasm.

22. I didn't cut my hair from July through a couple of weeks ago.
I liked having longish hair up to a point. After a while, it began to actually feel like it was breathing down my neck. It was fun to run it through the fingers, but a pain to keep it out of my face--in the wind, especially.

I'm liking having shortish hair for a change.

28. for gods sake NO
i am a 41 year old former long hair myself. here's why it doesn't look good on 40 year old guys:

1. you have a receding hairline.
2. men typically won't investing a decent hairbrush.
3. men typically don't learn how to brush or maintain long hair, resulting in split ends.
4. men typically will go too long without getting a trim, so the ends of the hair look really bad, plus their neck hair gets all long.

so unless you look like johnny depp or brad pitt (and you don't), or have a very swarthy, youthful hairline, or are going to be metrosexual & vain about mainitaining it, DONT DO IT.

31. My 38 year old male friend looks good with long hair
He looks much better than he did when he was 33 with short hair. He does not appear to be losing any hair though unlike some men that age. He trims his own ends regularly and knows how to care for it. His wife and daughters have really long hair too.
