What book are you?
This is kinda cool.

http://bluepyramid.org/ia/bquiz.htm

I'm

With an affinity for floating down the river, you see things in black and white. The world is strange and new to you and the more you learn about it, the less it makes sense. You probably speak with an accent and others have a hard time understanding you and an even harder time taking you seriously. Nevertheless, your adventurous spirit is admirable. You really like straw hats.

17. Pretty much. I mean listen to this:
Today I went to Costco -it was really windy and I didn't really want to go out, but we are out of milk, eggs and butter (which are staples of the Grumpy diet) so I went. When I got there, I could not believe-I mean this is Thursday, but it is payday- how many people were there. I thought I would be able to buzz -I have a lot of stuff to do at home today- through. but noooooo. There's a woman -and the odd thing is is that she had on one of those bizarre housecoats from the seventies that our grandmothers used to wear...but only in the house- in front of me with like, 60 items...Who buys 60 items all at once from Costco? And this woman was past the age of having children at home...but maybe she's a foster parent because you never can tell. Anyway, when I have a ton of items at Costco-especially at Costco because their cashiers are like, so darned slow- I look around to see if there is anyone-like a daddy buying triaminic for a sick kid at home- with one or two items and let them go ahead. Did this woman- I forgot to mention that she also had those pink foam type curlers (talk about total flashback to seventies) in her hair- turn around? Nope. Not once.

jp, are you listening, jp??? jp?

You're 1984!
by George Orwell
You have this uncanny feeling that you're always being watched. Thus life has become a bit of a show as you try to portray yourself as much more reputable than you actually are. All around you, people seem to accept an unending stream of lies and propaganda without flinching. Your only hope may be a star-crossed love affair, but pain seems stonger than love. If you have any older brothers, be very wary of them.

Nobody knows what to believe about you, and you know least of all. You spent most of your time convinced that the ends justify the means, but your means were, well, downright mean! And the end is nigh. Meanwhile all you want is to travel back in time, if not to change, then to just delight in the way it used to be. You are who you pretend to be. Oh yes, you're the great pretender.

September 11th really shook you up and when people think of you, that's the first thing that comes to mind. Regardless, you feel betrayed, beleaguered, and beaten. Your best friend turned his back on you and then started advocating environmental desecration. It seems that your only hope remains in two very short people who are very far from you. In the meantime, it looks like you're stuck between a rock and a hard place.

Interesting to say the least...

Strong-willed but deeply confused, you are trying to come to grips with a major crisis in your life. You can see many different perspectives on the issue, but you're mostly overwhelmed with despair at what you've lost. People often have a hard time understanding you, but they have some vague sense that you must be brilliant anyway. Ultimately, you signify nothing.

16. The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe

You were just looking for some decent clothes when everything changed
quite dramatically. For the better or for the worse, it is still hard to tell. Now it
seems like winter will never end and you feel cursed. Soon there will be an epic
struggle between two forces in your life and you are very concerned about a betrayal
that could turn the balance. If this makes it sound like you're re-enacting Christian
theological events, that may or may not be coincidence. When in doubt, put your trust
in zoo animals.

You simply don't know what to believe, but you're willing to try anything once. Western values, Eastern values, hedonism and minimalism, you've spent some time in every camp. But you still don't have any idea what camp you belong in. This makes you an individualist of the highest order, but also really lonely. It's time to chill out under a tree. And realize that at least you believe in ferries. (sic)

30. Love in the Time of Cholera

Like Odysseus in a work of Homer, you demonstrate undying loyalty by
sleeping with as many people as you possibly can. But in your heart you never give consent! This creates a strange quandary of what love really means to you. On the one hand, you've loved the same person your whole life, but on the other, your actions barely speak to this fact. Whatever you do, stick to bottled water. The other stuff could get you killed.

The damned book from Serendipity yet again and again and again. As time goes on, the truer it seems to ring. Destiny schmestidy.

You're A People's History of the United States!

by Howard Zinn

After years of listening to other peoples' lies, you decided you've
had enough. Now you're out to tell it like it is, with all the gory details and nothing
left out. Instead of respecting leaders, you want to know what the common people have to
offer. But this revolution still has a long way to go, and you're not against making a
little profit while you wait. Honesty is your best policy.

by Michael Crichton
You combine all the elements of a mad scientist, a brash philosopher, a humble researcher, and a money-hungry attracter of tourists. With all these features, you could build something monumental or get chased around by your own demons. Probably both, in fact. A movie based on your life would make millions, and spawn at least two sequels that wouldn't be very good. Be very careful around islands.

Deeply rooted in a religious background, you have since become both isolated and schizophrenic. You were naively sure that your actions would help people, but of course they were resistant to your message and ultimately disaster ensued. Since you can see so many sides of the same issue, you are both wise beyond your years and tied to worthless perspectives. If you were a type of waffle, it would be Belgian.

You're Catch-22!
by Joseph Heller
Incredibly witty and funny, you have a taste for irony in all that you see. It seems that life has put you in perpetually untenable situations, and your sense of humor is all that gets you through them. These experiences have also made you an ardent pacifist, though you present your message with tongue sewn into cheek. You could coin a phrase that replaces the word "paradox" for millions of people.

57. absolutely hilarious - Roots
I am Roots by Alex Haley. Check out my hobby listed on my profile. Also I found this to be sorta dead-on:
"While almost everyone agrees that you're brilliant, no one knows quite how to categorize you. Some say that you're a person with an amazing family tree. Some say that you're just a darn good storyteller. Others say that you're both and don't much care where to draw the line. What is known is that your people have been through a great number of trials and that you are where you are because of hard work. You have nothing to lose but your chains."

Well, except for the trials perhaps. My people are white after all, but I do have an ancestor who died in Andersonville and another one who lost a brother and became disabled due to the Civil War. Still, nothing like 300 years of slavery or the history of native Americans.

You're Pale Fire!
by Vladimir Nabokov
You're really into poetry and the interpretation thereof. Along the road of life, you have had several identity crises which make it very unclear who you are, let alone how to interpret poetry. You probably came from a foreign country, but then again you seem foreign to everyone in ways unrelated to immigration. Most people think you're quite funny, but maybe you're just sick. Talking to you ends up being much like playing a round of the popular board game Clue.

After stumbling down the wrong turn in life, you've had your mind opened to a number of strange and curious things. As life grows curiouser and curiouser, you have to ask yourself what's real and what's the picture of illusion. Little is coming to your aid in discerning fantasy from fact, but the line between them is so blurry that it's starting not to matter. Be careful around rabbit holes and those who smile to much, and just avoid hat shops altogether.

You're the first one in the thread too, I think! I love Lewis Carroll!

Ok, I have to post Jabberwocky now, even though it's from "Through The Looking Glass." This poem always creeps me out a bit. :7

’Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

“Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
The frumious Bandersnatch!”

He took his vorpal sword in hand:
Long time the manxome foe he sought —
So rested he by the Tumtum tree,
And stood awhile in thought.

And, as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
And burbled as it came!

One, two! One, two! And through and through
The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
He went galumphing back.

“And hast thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!”
He chortled in his joy.

’Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

You were just looking for some decent clothes when everything changed quite dramatically. For the better or for the worse, it is still hard to tell. Now it seems like winter will never end and you feel cursed. Soon there will be an epic struggle between two forces in your life and you are very concerned about a betrayal that could turn the balance. If this makes it sound like you're re-enacting Christian theological events, that may or may not be coincidence. When in doubt, put your trust in zoo animals.

You're A Theory of Justice!
by John Rawls
In the beginning, you lived in a town. The town had many problems! Rather than moving, you decided to come up with the idea for the best town ever. Going all the way back to the original position, you created the idea for the best town ever! Lo and behold, the best town ever looked almost identical to the town you lived in. You decided to stay in the town. Now you resent people mistaking your refined thought experiments for "the wall of stupidity" in high school debate rounds.

112. I'm The Handmaid's Tale

You're The Handmaid's Tale!

by Margaret Atwood

An outraged feminist, you have been oppressed and even silenced in your life, fueling your fury against the society as it stands. Your role has been strictly defined by society and you are almost certainly unsatisfied with it. You have some vague idea of how this has come to be, but insufficient power to stop it, let alone reverse the trend. And somehow you blame yourself for everything because
people ask you to. Beware people renaming your nation a Republic.

Yeah, this fits, sadly enough.

120. "The Hobbit"

You're The Hobbit!
by J.R.R. Tolkien
All you wanted was a nice cup of tea when some haggard crazy old man came into your life and told you it was time to do something with yourself. Now you're all conflicted about whether to stick with your stay-at-home lifestyle or follow this crazy person into the wild. While you're very short and a little furry, you seem to be surrounded by an even greater quantity of short folks lately. Try not to lose your ring, but keep its value in perspective!

KOEB, any nominations? :hi:

**disclaimer** I am not short, nor am I "furry."

123. Good Lord, I'm 'The Guns of August'
Spooky, real spooky.

I would have guessed any number of the other books mentioned in the thread.

Except that I spent part of last week learning more about WWI when I should have been working.

Are these people scanning my email or link history? I'm going to try this again using a Chinese proxy server.

The Guns of August
by Barbara Tuchman

Though you're interested in war, what you really want to know is what causes war. You're out to expose imperialism, militarism, and nationalism for what they really are. Nevertheless, you're always living in the past and have a hard time dealing with what's going on today. You're also far more focused on Europe than anywhere else in the world. A fitting motto for you might be "Guns do kill, but so can diplomats."

132. It's non-fiction--about the start of WWI
And how the war was not inevitable. Bad communication & the fact that so many diplomats were on vacation really caused one assassination to escalate into a hideously meaningless war.

I've read that JFK had read it just before the Cuban Missile Crisis. It reinforced his desire NOT to let things get out of hand. Too bad our current "president" never reads books.

Totally true.

Edited on Sat Apr-02-05 11:18 AM by intheflow
if I'm not mistaken. Still, it's a very, very good play, and I feel honored to have it be chosen to represent me. I think it's a pretty good analysis, although I've been fighting injustice for years and always clean my own messes.

Even though you should have realized it for years, you're only just
starting to understand how bad your society is. It's been keeping some of your best friends down for ages, and even you have been complicit with this system. When you make a mess, someone else is quick to clean it. When you need help, someone else is quick to your rescue. But when they point out injustice, you've pulled the wool over
your eyes. Until now. If you ever need a cast, it will be small.

141. "You're Anne of Green Gables" - Personally I never read it.
"Bright, chipper, vivid, but with the emotional fortitude of cottage cheese, you make quite an impression on everyone you meet. You're impulsive, rash, honest, and probably don't have a great relationship with your parents. People hurt your feelings constantly, but your brazen honestly doesn't exactly treat others with kid gloves. Ultimately, though, you win the hearts and minds of everyone that matters. You spell your name with an E and you want everyone to know about it."

How would they know? There were only about 5 questions. Shortest quiz I ever took.

I don't spell my name with an E either.

And WTF does the phrase "with the emotional fortitude of cottage cheese" mean??? I don't eat cottage cheese. Can't stomach it.
