I'll quote from one of Vancouver's finest...

"...the two people that were personating you (and dozens of others) were arrested last week and have remained in jail. We are hopeful that they will be held in custody until they appear in court for the many frauds they have committed."

6. You're welcome.
That was just a bad, bad time. I'm glad it's on the way to resolution.

3 cheers for the Vancouver PD.

5. The pigs actually did something about it?
Wow! Around here they won't even file a report! The owner of the company I work for was taken for over $75k, and the pigs wouldn't do a damn thing about it. He even had the address UPS delivered several items to, the same address that a furniture store delivered a couch to, a description from a motel clerk where they stayed, glasses from the motel that had a visible thumbprint which was probably theirs, a description and video of them from a travel agent's CCTV, and copies of their fake ID from a check cashing place. The cops just didn't give a damn. He ended-up having to sue them in civil court, and of course, didn't collect a dime even though he won.

11. The Vancouver Police Department
has an Identity Theft Task Force. The cops couldn't have been more helpful. They came to my place for me to file the report. (I phoned it in initially, they came to get more info.)

They told me who to call and what to do. They even called the Home Depot fraud department for me. (An account had been opened up in my name.)

I gave them info as I became aware of it. They kept me posted on their progress.

They were great.

12. keep an eye on legislation in congress
the feds are starting to take notice. And sometimes the cops need prodding. I spammed the upper echelons of the Seattle govt with complaints, and went to every agency I could think of. As a result, I did get taken seriously (by the inspector general's office at Social Security and the USPS), but sometimes ya gotta be pro-active.

If I'd allowed them a pass, they'd missed a crime involving a large gang and nearly $100,000 stolen in my name, SSN and DOB.

8. You're lucky
We had one of our business credit card #'s stolen when we started doing business with a particular distributor.

$90.00 worth of pizza, in Las Vegas, that sort of thing. We did some social engineering and got the guys name and everything.

Nothing the cops here or there would do if I wasn't willing to fly to Vegas for a trial.

The guy worked for the distributor I had made an order with. The president of the company didn't believe he would be that type of person and did nothing about it. I don't do business with them anymore.

10. What a rare outcome
Maybe it is different up there? Around here id theft is apparently pretty common.

How badly did the theft affect you (out of curiousity)?

15. They stole my mail, and got ALL my info.
They knew all sorts of tricks. They changed my contact info (phone) with the bank. They then proceeded to clean out my accounts, chequing, savings, line of credit, investments. My bank called "me" to check on a few transactions and "I" told them they were fine. Luckily, the person at the bank was suspicious and froze all my accounts. I had to go in to clear it up.

They were using my info for about a week. I'm lucky - I'm not out any money, except for the amount it cost me to get my mail held. It was a huge hassle though. I had to get all new accounts and do a ton of paperwork.

It's a big problem here too, that's why the VPD has a special task force for it - all they do is identity theft.
